Oakley is 6 months in a couple of days. Vet wants to abdominal neuterer in just over a weeks time – cause of risk of tests cancer for one , but two he suspects Oakley is intersex so would never drop …
How long would you wait to see first?

        I’m wondering if I should reschule for a months time – wait till he’s 7 months …
        What do you think?

Personally (opinion) if bandit was intersex or showing two different sexes I would try and get it done as soon as possible because the risk for cancer in intersex rabbits is VERY HIGH there are other complications as well but cancer is the most prominant. You also want to ensure that your bunny won t get confused possibly by mixing two sets of gender habits (end of opinion)

If you want your buns to live a long happy life and be together then spaying and neutering is always the best option

Oh I miss not questioning whether to neuter – just when to neuter.
Risk of cancer in waiting vs abdominal neuter risk
I’m meaning is neutering abdominally at 6 months to reduce cancer risk better then waiting to see a month later if he is dropped in which case if he has its a more straight forward neuter

With intersex you risk alot is what I’ve read. There can be complications that I can’t really explain cause I’m not a veterinarian but most of the articles that I’ve read say it’s in the best interest.

Do what feels right! I don’t have any advice as I’ve not come across this myself. I’m sure waiting will do no harm but you’ll be in the same position then if he hasn’t dropped x

If they haven’t made an appearance by now, they likely never will. So there isn’t any reason to wait at this point. At least not for that reason. Now if you want to wait a month for other reasons, it isn’t going to hurt anything.

Podge never dropped and the advice of two different vets was to leave it, due to the risk in putting him through abdominal surgery, so he is still unaltered. The second vet said he felt the risk of complications in cutting into the abdomen was higher than the risk of cancer at some point in the future.

Lbj10 no other reason – just that one
Limit yeah I know I could be in the same position but I guess I was hopefully thinking that maybe they could still drop
Gina.podge – interesting ! Do you know why there was more risk to do abdominal neuter than to leave it? I do want to neuter Oakley as I have two boys in the house so really don’t want spraying etc but I am very nervous and a bit scared
                      Oakley’s my baby

Wooly had an abdominal neuter. Just one of the jewels didn’t make it down though. The vet didn’t hesitate, she just called me to tell me what was happening. They removed the one testicle from down below. It looked like there were 2, but it turned out the second one was a fatty deposit. So she went into his abdomen to find the second one (which she did). It’s really no different than a spay, so I’m not sure what the concern is since girl buns are spayed all the time. Yes, it’s a more intensive surgery. But girls need to be spayed, so they do it.
