Matilda didn’t accept her treat she loves when I got back from work yesterday and it was kinda weird. I set it in her food dish and figured she could just grab it later. I was gonna be on the couch in the room for a while so I opened her cage up to let her roam around. She gets excited and runs out, prances across the room, binkies, then goes to lay down by the tv. She moved a couple times and would just lay down in another spot in the same area. No big deal, really, she’s a big lazy bunny! When it was time to get back in her cage for the night and eat her bowl of greens, she didn’t wanna go. I put my hands under her like I was gonna pick her up which usually gets her up and going, but I actually had to carry her this time. That was strange because she is definitely a ground bunny. Hates to be held. So she hops over to the corner of her cage and lays on the rug. I set the bowl of cilantro and red leaf lettuce down and told her she can get it whenever she wants. Filled her water and went to sleep.

Woke up this morning to get ready for work and bring Matilda her probiotic and she was in the same spot she was when I left her. Full bowl of greens, treat still in the food dish, and full water botte. Her ears were raised up and she was breathing, so she wasn’t dead or anything, but what’s going on here? There was urine on the rug under her too, so she couldn’t get up to go at some point. I brought her to the emergency vet this morning and an x-ray showed her stomach 4-5x bigger than it is supposed to be. I left her there so they could sedate her and remove whatever had her blocked up and came home. I guess it’s usually a ball of hair that gets clogged in there, but fluid coming out was all black and gross indicating her stomach had been damaged by whatever blocked it and the lining of her stomach was basically deteriorating. Even if they cleared the blockage, there was a good chance she still wouldn’t want to eat. It’s selfish of me to keep my bunny around if she’s going to be forever sick.

I went back to be with her while they euthanized her. My biggest regret with my last bunny is that I left before they euthanized her because I didn’t want to see it, but she was probably scared and I should have been with her. I spent a while in the exam room hugging and kissing Matilda and telling her how much I love her, then told the front desk I was ready. The vet warned me bunnies can be “more vocal” compared to dogs and cats, so I was expecting the worst. She put the needle in and started while I was petting Matilda’s head and touching her little hand, and she went real easy. Her head just slowly lowered further and further down. I opted for the urn with an engraved nameplate, some hair, and a paw print just like my last bunny, and they’ll call me in a few days.

I got about $950 of my $1500 depost back, but I sure would rather have my bunny.

Rest in peace, big bunny Matilda

I’m so sorry to hear about Matilda . I know it must be extra hard going through this since she had been rehomed many times until she chose you to warm up to. I’m glad though that you were with her when she passed. I think it definitely helped her go peacefully.

I’m so very sorry you lost Mathilda. It’s very hard to have to make a decision like that, but sometimes that’s the only thing we can do for a beloved pet.

            She was beautiful.

You’ve been very brave and selfless to make that decision, I almost had to do it a month ago for the same exact situation. Poor sweet baby, at least she had the comfort to pass with you. Be strong.
