Help! Velvet has a mushy poopy bottom and it is very stinky. I thought maybe he just made a mess of his cecotropes, but then I turned around to see one big glob of mushy poop on the floor and then another a few minutes later. His diet hasn’t changed at all, although he munches at baby brothers alfalfa through his cage while he is out playing. He has unlimited Timothy hay, 1/4 cup of pellets in the am (he weighs 5.5 lbs), a handful of parsley and cilantro, a sliver of banana, and 2 oxbow digestive tablets in a day. Is this a case of an upset tummy or is it a medical issue that requires a vet? He overcame GI stasis a few months ago. Is this the start of anything that serious? All the help is greatly appreciated!

My little Netherland Dwarf went through the mushy poopy bottom thing. I didn’t think much of it and later on she ended up at the ER vet for a week with a GI tract blockage. She died of a heart attack in my arms the day I got her back because she freaked out when I tried to give her the syringe of meds

Don’t take this lightly like I did, in my opinion. I hope Velvet is having this problem because of something else.

As a precaution i would stop the banana and reduce pellets by half, also prevent him accessing the alfalfa hay.

How long has he been on this diet? I’m not sure what the cause is but hopefully a few cut backs will help set him right.

Daily banana/fruits is seldom a good diet, cause not only they are highly caloric and sugary, but also can worsen a case of gas build up. To be on the safe side, do not give him fruit and encourage him to eat his dry food (pellets/hay). If his belly is making noises, gently massage it to help him pass gas.
It can happen that for whatever reason a bun may have one or two poop accidents (maybe he had access to things he shouldn’t have eaten? a nip from a houseplant? some human food found under the table?), but if he keeps not pooping right in the next hours do book an appointment with the vet to have him checked, especially if he already had GI problems.

              Keep us updated!
