Hi, my mini lop has a nasty looking rash on his back. It’s very sinsitive for him the hair also looks a little pulled around the area he might be chewing at it. I feels a little bumping but if you have a look at the photo attached you will have more of an idea. Has anyone had similar case? Is there a safe treatment that can be used to help him. He recently had his calici virus vaccine about 3-4 weeks ago, could this be a reaction (not the same spot the needle went in) any help would be greatly appreciated

Yikes! Hmm, it could be an adverse reaction. Hair loss and scabbing can occur after a vaccine is given and the calicivirus vaccine is known for this, but it’s typically at the injection site. My only other thought would be a skin infection like ringworm.

            I agree. ^

Do you happen to know the name of the calici vaccine he had?

Yeah, cylap is known to give a bit of a rash. It’s known as cylap burn. : ( As the vaccine is given under the skin, it can pool in other areas then cause a reaction there. You could always get him checked by the clinic that gave the shot or send them the photo. You shouldn’t be charged for recheck appt if the vaccine was the cause.
I think Ive had it happen twice with my rabbits and the area has healed up on it’s own. I don’t remember how long after the shot that I noticed it appear. I think it was within the 1st week. Cylap formula is supposed to be modified now that this reaction happens less, but it can still cause problems if the shot is given incorrectly – for instance, if vaccine goes between layers of skin and not under.

Thanks for that info, was just wondering if this was the case like you said it may not have been given correctly by the vet would the vaccine still be effective, if it goes between the layers of skin?
