My bunny Chino has only recently moved in with me and his diet had previously consisted of fresh grass and veggies. He had been nibbling on grass at my home for a few days until my dad mowed the lawn, ergo I cant give him fresh grass because the clippings are mixed up with leaves in the compost dump. I got him some very good quality hay a day ago and he barely touches it. I’ve tried mixing in some pellets which I give him as treats, but he just burrows through the hay to find them. Please help, I’m worried that he is going to be underfed!!!!! (Ps. I would have done a gradual diet change but my dad didn’t warn me about the mowing so i couldn’t act on it.)

Buns are usually slow to change their eating habits, so it can be regarded as normal behaviour. Keep offering him the hay and maybe add pressed hay pellets (like the Bunny Dream kind, for example). You might also try to stuff hay into a toilet paper roll to make him want to nibble it while he plays. In the meanwhile you can grow some grass in a vase so that you can keep offering some to him, since it’s excellent to maintain their teeth healthy

You didn’t say what kind of hay you gave to Chino. Since he is used to eating grass, maybe he prefers a softer consistency. You can get second or third cuttings of timothy hay, which are softer than regular first cutting of timothy. American Pet Diner Timothy Gold is a second cutting, which you can find at Petco or online. Small Pet Select has both second and third cuttings. You could also try some different hay varieties, such as orchard grass, which is softer and sweeter. The organic meadow hay I have gotten recently from Oxbow is a soft consistency. I’ve seen the fresh grass in pet stores, but it’s in very small pots, which wouldn’t last long.

I live in Germany so I wont be able to get oxbow brand hay here, but I will definitely look into gettimg him a softer hay. I gave him a bag of Timothy but it seems to be first cut. Thank you for your advice!

The excellent brand Bunny is from Germany (I use the Bunny Traum pressed hay pellets), so you can check those products if you’d like! The pellets are awesome!
