I have a 7ish week old bunny and I was wondering when I can start feeding him vegetables. I’ve read that’s it’s ok when he’s 8 weeks, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. So I’m wondering which is right if any. I don’t think I should give him them when he’s 8 weeks cause his digestive system is still developing. Also how do I introduce vegetables? And how much can I give him when he’s been eating them for a while, he is a Netherland dwarf I’m not sure how much he will weigh but his mom was 1.6 pounds so the breeder told me he would be a little bit smaller. I’ve read 2 cups per 6 pound rabbit but how much is that for my rabbit (he will probably be around 1.2 pounds). I’ know what vegetables are safe and what’s not but I want to know if cucumber and tomatoes are safe cause I’ve read on some websites they are and some there not.

I agree, 8 weeks old is a little too young to bring in vegetables unless it was eating some when still with the mother.
The House Rabbit Society recommends introducing them at 12 weeks of age. Older then that would be fine too.

Just start with one or two at a time in small portions (1/2oz or less). Once your rabbit is eating those without problems, you can bring in more variety.

Some tomato and cucumber would be okay. Everything in moderation..  Remember, those are both fruits also.  The tomato plant/leaves would not be safe. From my dodgy memory.

I introduced very small amounts of kale to my baby at 8.5 weeks. Now at almost 3 months I feed him a leaf about the size of his head for breakfast and dinner. Always gauge your bunny and do what you think is best what breed is he so I have something to go off of?

Thanks for your replies! I will probably start around 12 weeks. Thanks for answering about cucumber and tomatoes.

He is a Netherland dwarf so he’s pretty small.

I strongly recommend holding off on the veggies until they’re at least 12 weeks old. I had two young rabbits who were between 5 and 8 weeks old when I got them. I was feeding them a diet of hay, pellets and a LOT of fresh grass and greens. They both died of gut problems within 4 weeks. One got terrible diarrhea and died in 5 hours and a week later, the other died of GI stasis.

It was a horrible experience to lose them both within 5 days of each other, and the second one died while I was holding him and trying to force feed him.

Please don’t risk it. Stick to hay and pellets until they’re older. It’s really not worth the risk.

I’m so sorry about your bunnys. I will definitely wait until he is 12 weeks I might even wait longer.

Sometimes it depends on the rabbit too, you can try at 12 weeks but if he reacts badly, then just stop veggies, and wait another month before trying again. That’s what I had to do with my bun, Bandit. He got stomach upset when I introduced veggies at around 13 weeks, so I waited another month before trying veggies again and then he was fine

As long as you start with small amounts, you should be fine

Cleo is 9 weeks & has been eating them for a couple weeks with no problems. I took him to the vet to get his nails trimmed & the vet told me what to feed & not to feed as far as fruits & vegetables. He never said anything about age. Cleo is a Netherland Dwarf too. He kinda eats what he wants he doesn’t seem to over eat & sometimes won’t eat it at all. He usually gets a little vegetable in the morning & a piece of fruit the size of a thumbnail at night. Gosh after reading all this I hope the vet didn’t tell me wrong & I’ve done anything to hurt him!
