My bunny is 8 weeks old and is eating Alfalfa hay. I was wondering when I can switch him to a grass hay (like Timothy). And what is the best type of grass hay? And I know there is lots of other types of hay like meadow, oat, etc. Would he benefit by eating these hays with grass hay?

Timothy hay is good and readily available in the US. It’s not too high in calcium or protein and most rabbits like it. Rabbits need low protein, high fibre diets and hay is 80% of their diet. A lot of people are allergic to Timothy so Orchard grass is another option. Rabbits really like this too. Here in Australia, we have Oat and Wheat hay available the most. Good meadow hay is hard to find. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to introduce your rabbit to a variety of hays. It will make it more interesting for them. And if you ever have a shortage of the main hay, at least you know they will eat the other varieties readily. Some hays, like Oat or “botanical hay” which has fragrant flowers in it, you could give to them as a healthy treat. : )

You should feed alfalfa freely and unlimited until their at least 1 year old is what the ABRA reccomends. However depending on your breed like my havana I will feed him alfalfa til I see he starts reaching 3.8-4.5 lbs as that’s the minimum healthy weight recommended by the ABRA as I don’t want him a super chunky like the show havannas look (5.5-6.5 lbs) almost like a large black basketball with a tiny head.
