My bunny Peanut just did a spay on Tuesday and we took her home yesterday night. The vet gave us some pain medication and taught us how to use the syringe to give the meds. She has been eating a little bit and drinking some water. But she seems just want to lay down and not do anything. Also she seems very sad.

Just wondering how long does it take for female bunny to get out of this phase. I feel very guilty in making her do the surgery. Any advice or suggestion will be great. Thanks.

It varies from bun to bun. My Buttercup was pretty lethargic and unhappy with me for 2 days then she was back to normal. She still had limited space tho for 10 days to ensure she healed. She was a speedy recovery tho, from what I’ve read it usually takes females longer than 2 days! So long as she is eating and pooping, drinking and peeing, she’s probably just feeling very rough as a spay is very invasive surgery. She’ll perk up don’t worry Just keep on top if pain management and give her a little time.

None of my bunnies were sent home with pain meds after being spayed/neutered. The ladies took about 4 days to start feeling better. I kept them in a travel cage 18″wide 24″long 18″high, for about 2 weeks. By 7 days they were feeling ready to run around, but I kept them confined for another week to be sure they had healed. After that, I put them each in a 4×4 enclosure for 2 weeks, then I let them have free reign. Females do typically take u to a week to start to feel better. Pain meds will help. Just keep her still, offer her favorite veggies/treats, and be sure she is sitting on a soft comfy surface.
Don’t feel guilty – you did the right thing. Female rabbits have 80-90% change of developing uterine cancer by age 5, if left unspayed.

Here are a few things you can do to help:

              1. Some heating pads, female buns love to lay on the heating pads non electric and not too hot but just to make them warm as it helps with the pain. If you use a heating electrical pad make sure it’s at the lowest setting possible and turn it off now and then to ensure it does not get hurtful hot with lots of supervusion.

              2. Pain medication is key, don’t miss a pain medication giving make your bunny happy. Put some banana on the tip if your having trouble feeding and ensure that you give it sideways through the cheek.

              3. If it’s been 12-24 hours and still no poops or eating and drinking water consider going to the vet for gi stasis immidately. See if you can feed critical care for rabbits as she might not want to move die to pain using the same method As you do with medicine.

              4. Limit her space by letting her be in her cage or whatever she considers her safe space. Bandit stayed in his cage for about a day and then wanted to come out and lay on the towel in the living room to socialize

              5. I slept near my bunny for a few days, just to ensure that he was ok and wasn’t chewing or excessively grooming the stitches.

              6. Love your bunny by reassuring and small pets if she accepts them to calm her.

              7. Temperature, no extremes. Keep your room between 70-78 degrees ferienheight for comfort. Setting your a.c. to 78 should be good enough to keep her comfortable. If you also have a ceiling fan turn it on low to keep air circulating.

It sounds like she is just catching up on some rest and trying to recover after the surgery . I’ve read posts where some buns are moving around normally after a couple days, others 5-7 days. Luna rested the whole day/night after her spay, then was more aware by the next day. I wouldn’t worry as long as she can move around enough to reach her food and water, and she continues to eat and drink and poop.

last night was our first time trying to give her the pain meds. Could not get her to hold still and put the meds in her mouth. Do i have to give her meds? she seems to be getting better. I don’t want to scare her more by forcing her to take her meds.

Could you try putting the meds on some food? I put the metacam on lettuce leaves and both of my bunnies gobbled them up.

That’s what i decided to do last night. she seems to have ate it all. I guess i will have to do that then, i don’t want to stress her out too much.

I thought the exact same – I didn’t wanna stress the buns out any more. I actually put the medicine on lettuce in a bowl and both bunnies licked the bowl after eating the lettuce. I would just see if you can give her the lettuce when you’ve got a bit of time to watch, just in case it ends up dripping off the leaf or something

Ooh just remembered – someone on here (possibly Jersey?) suggested injecting the medicine into the stem of the lettuce leaf. That way it won’t drip off.
