I have a 13 week old female bunny who has always peed all over her cage. I have a neutered male who I never even had to teach how to use the litter box, even at 9 weeks he has never had an accident. But my female is nasty! She pees all over her cage and just sits in it! My male has free reign over the house and goes in and out of his cage. I had hoped that when I got this female she would be the same. I had tried all the suggestions to “help” or “teach” her how to use the litter box. I’ve put many litter boxes around her cage, I clean the pee with paper towel and then put it in the litter box, I don’t clean it up thinking that maybe its a territory thing. Iv’e decreased her space into a smaller cage, it didn’t matter she would still pee outside her litter box. I don’t know what else to do. Last week she almost died of GI stasis but she made it, an Easter miracle. I plan on getting her spayed when she is 100% recovered and completed all meds from infection. However I feel like her litter habits most likely won’t get better with age? HELP!!

It can be very hard to littertrain an unspayed rabbit. Some just take to the box but pee up the wall behind it so they still need to be neutered/spayed.

Some young animals need a good deal of time to reach bladder control for physiological reasons (they’re not fully grown inside).

Another possibility is a UTI or a parasite (e cuniculi) that makes it difficult for her to control her bladder. Do you see her struggle to pee?

Some rabbits take a really long time to pick up litter box habits… and some never really become 100% compliant unfortunately. Do your best and be persistent when possible. It’s most beneficial if you can pick her up right when she’s about to pee or directly afterwards, so it’s easier to make the link between her peeing and the move to the litter box. Sometimes, even if you catch it 5 seconds after they do it, they don’t really understand why you moved them into the litter box.

I’ve spent a creepy amount of time staring at Wick’s bottom when he was at the peak of litter box training.

She’s actually on antibiotics right now for GI stacis and no UTI was found at the vet. When she’s feeling 100% I’ll take her to get spayed. I really hope that helps.

It’s hard because when I’m watching her I don’t notice the pee till she hops away. She just sits in it! She’s always wet on bottom from her pee. It’s so yucky! My sweet neutered male never had any issues like this. He’s so clean and tidy.

It’s definitely frustrating. I have 3 bunnies who always had impeccable litter habits. Then one of them got EC, and now he sits in his pee. But young bunnies might sit in their pee because they don’t have the physiological maturity not to. Keep an eye on her health, but you may have to wait until 4 weeks past her spay, to begin to notice any improvement.
One of my adult bunnies never developed perfect litter habits. She still pees over the edge of the box, pees on soft fluffy fleece blankets, poops along her territorial boundary, and poops in the general area of her litter box. Always has.
