I live in the UK, Britain, so our weather is different to lets say, some parts of America,  so we had a lot of rain and now the sun is out, me and Olly have got some bugs, quite a lot of little black ants, last night I was having a cup of tea and they decided to walk round the rim of my cup.

Last night I went to make a sandwich, I put the sandwich on the plate on my desk and put some music on my PC, next thing they were all over my plate, luckily here they are not like fire ants, but does anyone know how to keep them out of here? They are annoying, but is there a way to stop them getting in? They only hang about near my desk, I checked online for the council to do it and there is a very big fee, we don’t want to use sprays or anything which may harm Olly.

Maybe you or your little brother or sister keeps an ant farm and could give me and Olly some advice on how to keep them out,

This board is for everything else so no worries. Question if you smash one of the ants do they have a strong smell afterwards? If the answers yes then these are water ants which are not harmful but annoying as there everywhere.

If they are not then these are black garden ants which can bite and are dangerous to your bunny especially if she accidentally finds the hill. To prevent them from going into your cage some stores sell ant liner which prevents them from climbing. Their main sources of food are fruits such as strawberries and honeydew sap and smaller bugs and invertebrates.

I had a huge ant problem last year at my old apartment and they were in Meki’s area. What I ended up doing was getting ant bait that ants eat/take back to their hill that kills the entire colony – no sprays involved. I had my boyfriend spray the OUTSIDE of the apartment wall with ant spray so no more could find their way in, and when I got REALLY fed up at one point I took a hot glue gun and sealed all the cracks in the baseboards I saw them coming out of. Don’t recommend the last one especially if you’re renting, but it was effective and my landlord wasn’t very precise with apartment checks.

I resorted to all that because when I called my landlord about the ants, he said he could call an exterminator, but I told him I had pets and didn’t want them around the fumes, he said that was all he could do. So helpful =/

We also had this problem recently in our apartment. We used the ant poison bait traps as well and it was very effective. I just put them in an area where I often saw ants and blocked off that space so Thor couldn’t access the traps. In the last few weeks, no more ants have been spotted! One thing to keep in mind is that these traps are quite species specific so you may need to try a few kinds to find one that works. Good luck!

You’d have to make sure Olly doesn’t lick or ingest this, but I’ve heard that “peppermint essential oil” repels many bugs, including ants. If you can find or guess where they are coming into the house then you can mix it with just a tiny bit of water and spray it outside along the windows/doors.

Yes, good point! I only tried the traps because I was sure they were completely inaccessible – up on a window sill behind a gate.

Ant liner is a plastic treated with lemon oil and is super smooth, I can’t find the manufacturer of it but it is out there. You can alternatively use lemon oil to stop them from going inside.here is a site that can help in defense and some are pet friendly but you decide for yourself https://www.organiclesson.com/how-to-kill-fire-ants-naturally-and-effectively/

Something that I’ve done in the summer that works every time is borax. Heat up some water, put a decent amount of sugar in it, let it dissolve, and then add a small amount of borax. Soak up this substance with a cotton ball and put where the ants trail is, like on the edge of a counter. The warm sugar water will attract the ants and they will eat it and then go back to their nest and die. Just make sure your bunny doesn’t eat the cotton balls! I put them in a place where my bunny can’t get to.

Also be aware that borax is extremely lethal to bunnies, it will tear holes in their gi tract if injested. If you use borax make sure you keep the rabbit away from the areas where ants might roam or head to as borax might fall into grass or vegetables. After 1 week borax dissolves and should he safe but if it was me I would wait another week (two total) and rinse all areas with a hose very thoroughly

Borax got banned by the EU a while ago. You can get a substitute here in the UK but it doesn’t work for killing ants, we tried recently. We ended up buying Nippon ant bait and it worked great. But as always be sure to keep it out of reach of your rabbit.
