        Hi everyone,

My almost 5 year old lop-lionhead mix had some allergies about 2 weeks ago and had her nasal passages/tear ducts flushed out because she had a lot of mucus and her eyes were watering badly. Right before she had this, her left ear became limp first and as she recovered, it started to come up again. It’s been almost 3 weeks now, and her ear is not limp anymore, but looks like helicopter ears.

Should I be worried that the ear is sprained or does it just take them a while to recover and get the ear back up. There were no signs of infection when the vet looked at her, but I know the ears, eyes, nose are all connected, so I was hoping she was going to be okay.

        Thanks for the help!

Since your rabbit is part lop, it would be normal for her to have an ear or ears that aren’t straight up. I think sometimes that ears might lop or fall with age. I had a rabbit who had helicopter ears when we adopted him, but when he got older, his ears looked more like lop ears hanging down. It could be that your rabbit’s ear was affected by her allergies and the procedure she had, but it may also be that her ears are lopping more due to age.

Did they sedate her for the procedure? if they used the ear to insert the IV needle, it can be that it stays a bit flopped for a while. My bun’s ear is starting to perk up these days after a good 3 weeks of being helicopter style because of it being weighted down by the IV

Thank you for the replies!! She usually has ears that are straight up and they would never be sideways even when she’s been sick in the past. But you’re right she might be recovering slower due to age and I had no idea about the IV thing either, but that’s confusing that they would do that knowing that ear was already limp when she went in for the procedure. I should mention she also had her teeth clipped that day, so it was a pretty long day for bun bun.

Here’s a picture of her normal ears vs this morning if that’s helpful!
