So rookie has GI stasis since Friday afternoon. He has been to the ER Friday night when I initially realized what is going on. Then we went back to our vet the next morning as despite medication he was not improving. The vet then kept him for half a day in incubator and he got fluids then got to take him home. We then again went back to the ER that night as he was still not showing as much improvement as I had hoped.

He is still not eating he is yet to poop and he did per himself once. He had very small super soft poops very few this morning. I was hoping that was a turn for the better but he is still not moving around a whole lot and appears to be half asleep and zoned out.

He is getting critical care every 2 hours as well as all his meds and yet still no poops and really no per either even though he keeps drinking quiet a bit and he got 100ml IV this morning.

Has anyone who has gone through this before can let me know if I’m expecting changes too quickly and if the whole constant sleeping okay for him as he is on a lot of meds and is obviously struggling as he hasn’t had any poops since Friday afternoon now.

        Thanks.

For a severe case of stasis, at least in my experience, it can be that no poops are seen for a few days. Do go on with the medications and massage his belly to help stuff moving, especially if he has a lot of air. Be patient and keep going!

The recovery time for stasis can be as short as a few days or it can be a week or so until your bun is back to normal. That’s good that he is drinking and taking his critical care. So he had a few poops this morning, or not since Friday? One of his meds should be for gut motility. If he pooped a little bit today then that’s good, but if he is eating and hasn’t pooped since Friday, I would call the vet. Luna sends vibes ((((Rookie)))).

Yeah I saw a few soft poops from him today…very few though. Smell soo bad too.
I feel so bad for him. I keep trying to keep him as warm as possible and I feed him critical care every few hours cause after only a few ml he just spits it out so there is no point. So I just do little many times.
He keeps putting his entire face in the water bowl. I hear him sometimes blow bubbles with his nose. So he does drink a lot and he got his IV this morning. I would almost want to give him more but the vet said 100ml every 24 hours. If still no poops we are going back to the vet at 8 am in the morning. Unless of course he gets worse in which case ER it is…again…

He is not eating on his own. Only gets the CC I give him. The poops this morning and a few hours ago were almost the ones he is supposed to eat on consistency and look. And boy o boy do they ever stink.
He is on Metoclopramide, trimebutine maleate, metacam, cisapride, simethicone, and he is supposed to get buprenorphine for pain but it causes a bit of sedation and he is already droopy so I’m not giving it to him today. He isn’t grinding his teeth as much in pain today so I think the metacam is okay for his pain for now.

Sounds silly, but try holding him on his side while doing a belly rub. Helps the gas pass. Its good that he is drinking. Holding thumbs…

He lies on his side so he makes it easy. But he also lets me massage it as he is standing. He’ll just stand as I massage his tummy.
And of course just as I said he isn’t grinding his teeth in pain….he is grinding them now like crazy. So I gave him the painkillers for the night. I just don’t like it as he becomes all dazed and droopy eyed. He got his meds for the night. Just gave him some CC as well. I think just to be safe I’ll call and take him to the vet in the morning

Sorry you are going through this. It’s the worse when they’re sick on holiday weekends.

I wonder if x-rays would be worth while, maybe to help identify why this has come on?
With his drinking a lot and putting his face in bowl, could he habve some dental pain maybe? Or is he so drowsy, he’s dropping his head in?

No he fully puts his face in then lifts for air and does it again.
His teeth were the first thing they checked due to his recent dental history. They checked at ER each time and at the vet too and it’s all good they said.
His intestines loosened up a bit by the feel of it just now. On the left side just under his ribs is that the stomach? Cause that is very hard and bloated. I just don’t want it to be his kidneys.
He drinks the water as I have to change the bowl each time he does it cause he does drink down from it. But then he only peed once today.

So new development. Rookie had some slimy poops just now mixed with very yellow urine.
Is this a good thing? Can anyone advise?

Is he lying on just one side?

Nope. He lies a bunch of ways. Sometimes the feet out the side lounge no particular side favored or the loaf position or the more relaxed squishy loaf when he still has his feet under loaf style but is spread out and close to floor

Yes, it’s more to the left, just below ribs (and partially under I think). If it’s really hard and ballooning out, you’ll need to take him back in asap,

Some bloodwork could help in figuring out what is going on.

I think it’s it a good think if any poop is coming out!  The poops can be quite funky if they haven’t been pooping normally for a day or more. The sliminess is probably mucus. Also expected after gut slowdown.

Oh yeah I gagged on the clean up. So smelly.

His entire tummy has been bloated but the vet has seen him like that already and was given meds.

I’m afraid that if I take him back to the ER they will want to do a surgery . Yesterday when the options for him to stay i got 2 estimates…one that was $800 and one that was near $2000 that included a stomach pump.

I obviously would like the best for him but if he coudl just get away with staying the night and then I could take him to our regular vet at 8am.

I’m going to give him some CC and IV in the next hour or so.

I mean really he is on every possible meds to get him moving and get better again.

He has been sitting up more than all weekend and let’s me massage his belly. And that’s when the poop and pee came out.

I can understand that! Surgery is something you’d want to avoid if at all possible. They’d need to xrays before attempting surgery anyway, surely?
I was just concerned when you mentioned the stomach being hard because of bloat – that would be an emergency. But if he is letting you massage and is producing some droppings, I think it’s fair to say you aren’t dealing with bloat. He’s be in great pain if so. It does sound as if his GI tract is moving and the treatment is working.
That he is lying in different positions is a good thing too, in my opinion. : )

Maybe the bigger feeling tum is due to all the water he’d drinking? And some gas too?

Im probably not the person to be “advising” at the moment. I have a bun not wanting to eat and my head is all over the place trying to figure out what the heck is going on. So I sympathise with you a lot!

He is bloated a bit but the doc has said that already and he is already taking meds for it.
I keep very close eye on him only sleeping an hour at a time on the floor with him.
And he has also been getting critical care. But other than the two times of very little poops he produced he has not pooped since Friday night. So the tummy being bloated is probably expected.

Poor baby is uncomfortable. Can’t find a good position lie down in. I called the ER and they said because he isn’t lethargic he is actually more aware and awake than he has been all weekend to just wait till our regular vet opens.
I stopped CC and took his water away. His stomach is all bloated but with water as I can hear swirling in him when he tries to hop.
                                          3 more hours….hurry up clock!

You got him all the necessary medical care when he got his stasis, and he was doing better and you had a vet appointment that he was going to. And who knows if the ER would have been able to do anything different. I think Rookie passed peacefully because he knew you were with him, and I think that would have been hard on both of you if you hadn’t been there when it happened. We are all here for you.

Ohhhhh Rookie. I am so very, very sorry. But you did not fail him.
His behaviour seemed strange and out of the ordinary with his popping his face in the water bowl so often.
There is nothing to say ER could have saved him either… (they didn’t seem 100% sure what they were treating him for as he wasnt getting any better).

Our sweet darling bunnies are so fragile and get taken from us so quickly that there sometimes simply isn’t enough time to dig deeper into the underlying problem.

I am so sorry and I know you can’t see it now, but it is NOT your fault.

Keep writing on here. We understand.

What a terrible, terrible outcome But don’t carry that on your shoulders. It wasn’t your fault at all. As others have said, buns are very fragile. Scarily fragile.

You didn’t fail him. He was very, very sick. You have nothing to blame yourself for. As the others have said, buns can be so very fragile. And it did seem like he was getting better.

I’m so sorry you lost him. Please keep writing here, if you want to. We’ll be listening to you. It can help a little bit to be around people who can understand.

It was just so sudden. I truly tried so hard to save him. He was my only one. The only sweet little guy to wait for me to get home and get so excited when I did. And despite all the meds and everything that we have been through over the last month’s he never stayed grumpy and always gave me bunny kisses. I miss him so much. I still can’t believe it’s true. I dread having to go to sleep and waking up to this reality again and I fear the day when I come home to an empty apartment.

I’ve been thinking all day about what to write, I’ve recently almost lost my bun to a problem that sounds similar (too similar) to what happened to your Rookie and this sad story hits very close to home for me. Please believe who wrote that you did everything you could, because you did do everything in your power to save him. Be strong and keep writing us when you need to vent or talk.

It just breaks my heart to think that maybe have I just left him at the ER on the Saturday he may have made it?
It’s just seems like such a haze of reality of I can’t believe this is really happening and that he is really gone.

If he had passed at the ER alone, I think that would have added to your sadness so much more. But on the way to the vet he knew you were with him, so it’s good because he wasn’t scared or felt alone when he passed. I know that might not be reassuring now, but hopefully it will help you through your grieving.

It’s of course not possible to say if he’d have made it if you’d left him there, but honestly, I doubt it. He was very sick, and being in a strange environment is stressful in itself. By keeping him home he got to spend his last time with you, the person he loved and who loved him so much through his life. It must’ve been a comfort for him.
