        Hi guys!

I was given a couple of newspapers and I was planning on using them for Tambor’s litter pan. I contacted the newspaper and they told me they use “cold-set” ink. Is it safe for bunnies?

I know there are some inks that are dangerous and others, safe. But I cannot find more info about this.

        Thanks!!

I just started mixing in some newspaper in Luna’s litter box too! I still use bedding but the added newspaper is definitely helping. I’m not sure what type of ink newspapers use, but I’ve read before that pretty much all newspapers use an ink that is safe for buns. However, even though the ink is safe, it’s not good for your bun if he ingests a lot of it. If you are worried that Tambor might chew up and ingest the newspaper bits, use the newspaper pages that have the most text and not huge photos, since more ink is concentrated in the photos to print them.

Thank you, Luna! He’s not a chewer, so I’m more concerned about him staining his paws with toxic ink and then liking them clean.

We’re trying it today. My hubby put a thick layer of hay on top. Hopefully that’ll prevent the wet newspaper from reaching Tambor’s paws.

That’s a good point, I didn’t even think of that! For now, the newspaper in Luna’s litter box sits on the bottom and I cover the top with a light layer of bedding. I’m set on experimenting with different materials and layering until I come up with a good litter combination lol. Hope the newspaper with Tambor goes well .

                Hi Luna!

We already used up all the newspaper and putting a layer of hay on top definitely helped, yahoo! There was no wet ink and, so, Tambor’s paws were never in danger of getting stained by possible “dangerous” ink .

Did you find the best combination for Luna’s litter?

That’s great! I just started a new combination last week – Aspen wood shavings covered by a thin layer of Carefresh bedding. A 57L bag of Aspen costs the same as a 25.7L bag of Carefresh, so it’s cheaper than buying Carefresh all the time, but the shavings get everywhere so I cover them with a little Carefresh so they don’t get tracked out of the litter box. It’s working well so far .
