My bunny Coco has always been itching himself, at first I thought it was mites, but then I saw that it was a regular thing and he didn’t have any mites or dirty ears. Last night, I was playing with him and he itched himself and was licking himself like he always does, and I went to double check cause it has been a few months since I checked him for mites or fleas. I checked his ears and they looked fine, the color of his skin with no wax or dirt or yellowish gray scales. Then, I checked his ears. I saw something that didn’t look like a mite, it looked kind of like a tiny grain of sand. I watched it for a couple minutes and it didn’t move or anything, I even touched it and held it in my finger tips and it didn’t do anything. I got very panicky so I searched the fluffiest and thickest parts of his coat. He’s a lionhead so I checked his very fluffy part behind the ears. I checked the skin and all the fur around it. There were no spots or anything there. I then checked his neck and there was nothing there. His skin didn’t have ‘dandruff’ and it wasn’t flaky or dry. So what could that thing on the back of his ears be?? I really don’t want to take him to the vet cause he gets very stressed out on car rides and there are no open exotic vets right now. If I don’t do anything will he be fine?? Does he just need some grooming or brushing or something??

Rabbits will scratch or shake their heads when fur gets in their ears. If your bunnies fur is growing too long in his ears you might have to trim them carefully with some sissors as it’s probably bothering him.

If it was stuck to his hair like it had been glued to it, it could perhaps be a louse- or flea egg. Was it only the one? Could it have been a grain of sand that got stuck there when he was itching himself with his hind feet?

Advantage (imidaclopride) can be used to treat fleas and lice in rabbits. Ivermectin and selamectin are other bunny safe treatment options.

It doesn’t really sound like ear mites since his ears look fine inside, and it doesn’t sound like fur mites because they cause flakiness (“dandruff”) even when the infestation hasn’t gone very far.
