Ok, so we have a French lop called Monty he has been with us for a while. And he is big. We are currently trying to bond him with a Rex called Maggie who is coming into his territory.. Both spayed/neutered. We had them in a neutural territory on carpet for weeks and they didn’t seem to progress. Every time Maggie would approach Monty he would nip her and sometimes chase her although she was far to quick for him. We got fed up with the lack of progress so came up with a plan.Monty struggles to walk on kitchen/bathroom floors because of his size so it really puts him out of his comfort zone. Seen as Monty was the problem this seemed like a good idea. So anyway long story short after 2 days and 1 night of being in the kitchen together they have been laying toghether grooming each other and getting on great. So I read online to increase space slowely. So I moved the cages a bit further back revealing some
Carpet as our kitchen and living room are attached.(in the living room which is montys room). The thing I need help with as soon as I opened up just a foot of carpet Monty changed and went back to the nipping and being pretty harsh to Maggie who seemed to think their relationship was going well ha! Any way we have reduced them back to the kitchen and straight away back to grooming a cuddling.?!?!? I don’t know why the carpet seems to change Monty so much. Do I just give them more time in the small space in the kitchen? I’m a little confused. The only thing I’m assuming is I increased the space too soon.

I hope that makes sense and welcome any ideas/advice
        Thanks

The carpet changed Monty because it smells like him, because its his territory. Can you try a deep clean on all of the carpet area they will share in the future? You also shouldn’t progress until about a week of success in one area. So let them cuddle and groom in the kitchen for about a week, in that time deep clean the carpet, and after the carpet is clean and the week is over, expand their bonding area a bit

Ok we have cleaned the carpet etc and cleaned out his cage with conifer to remove the smell. We are now at a new stage where Monty is constantly chasing he round trying to mount her. He’s going a bit it over the top with this ATM and she is getting annoyed with it I’m hoping it’s just a faze and after this maybe the bond will be better. Tbf after seeing this it’s clear that despite the grooming I guess a hierarchy hadn’t really been sorted so maybe that explains the chasing?
