        Hello!
I bought a new bag of hay, opened it and as I was separating the bale, I found these strange, hard branches that look like they are from a tree… the buns love it but I’m unsure whether it’s safe. I usually get this sort of hay, but I’ve never seen these sticks inside! I give them tiny pieces, and they seem to be fine, but I just want to make sure they are safe before I give them more.
They are brown on the outside, and green inside.
Picture file is too big, sorting this problem out soon!
        ThankuXx

Sometimes I find sticks like that in my hay as well, it’s never caused a problem though I usually just take them out when I see them because I don’t like them in the litter box lol. Sorry I can’t be much help haha.

I think I’ve seen what you are describing, and whenever I saw them I just took them out. If you aren’t sure what it is, I wouldn’t feed it to them, but I’m sure the hay itself is fine. Can you take a smaller pic to shrink the file size?

You can upload pix to an external source like Flickr or imgur or Google Drive and paste the link to the pix here. That way pic size doesn’t matter.

Not sure whether you can see the pic, I’m doing this on a tablet and I can only see a link….

It might be a bit of alfafa from a previous crop. The stems can be quite woody. Or maybe a weed like thistle?

Reminds me of an alfalfa stalk as well.

Could be a wildflower too, like cone flowers, etc. It’s hard to say without having anything else to go on.
