Contrary to what most have said, Snuggles’ toilet habits have literally gone down the drain! He used to be at least 80% toilet-trained pre-neuter, but now he just pees and poops all over his cage. He doesn’t eliminate outside, however.

I’ve been trying to put pee-soaked tissues into his tray to accumulate scent, but I can’t keep doing that as flies will come after a while… I have also been putting him on his tray and giving him treats when I see him poop. But it doesn’t seem to help much.

I guess one advantage is that he is SO much friendlier now, I couldn’t even play with him in the past but now he would lie down on his back on my lap and let me pet him  However the lack of hygiene is really worrying…

        Help would be greatly appreciated!

How long his it been since his neuter?

You’ll be glad to know this is not unusual and does normally get better. It’s even thought there may even be a surge in hormones due to the neuter and the testes being handled. Regardless, their body is going through some adjustments and it can take a few weeks for that to happen.

Hmm, I did consider that but if it’s due to hormonal surges, it wouldn’t conincide with the fact that he is so much tamer now

Thanks so much for the response, what do you suggest I do for now whilst hoping his toilet habits go back to normal after a while? I’ve also placed his hay next to the litter box.

So he has to get in the box to reach the hay? That is best.
What type of litter do you use?
Is the rest of his cage/habitat covered in bedding of any kind?
Was anything in his habitat changed for the post-neuter period?

                Yupp. I use paper pellets.
It’s covered in old fabric haha, and yes I did change the environment bc the bottom part of the cage was dirty. This was to prevent infections as post neutering he had an open wound.

Maybe it is the fabric that is making him toilet all over? Some rabbits always want to pee on absorbent things. And some protest any change.

Try soaking the base of the cage with vinegar and water. As in a whole bottle of vinegar then the same of water. That should help neutralize any small and help lift any crud. Alternatively, line the cage with a vinyl offcut?

If going back to a wipeable surface doesn’t help with the litter habits, maybe using puppy pee pad would help keep things cleaner for the meantime.

Hmm, so basically I try using a more solid base for the rest of the rabbit cage and perhaps more absorbent material for his litter box?

If I just rinse the entire cage except for the litter area with vinegar would it be toxic to him?

You won’t want him in there while you do that. Its a bit strong on our noses, let alone a buns. For small clean ups, a spray bottle with vinegar/water would be fine and not toxic.

Were you using the paper pellets in the rest of the cage too, or just in the litterbox?

Okay, I’ll try that. They’re only in his litter box. The rest of his cage is padded with thick cloth
