It’s been 4 days since we got Bing spayed.
She’s recovering very well. Eating fine and
pooping normally. She had a check up at the
Vet yesterday and they’re very happy with how
her wound is healing. She is keen to get
out, biting at the bars. But I don’t want to
let her out too soon and risk damage. She has
her final vet check in another 6 days. Do I
need to keep her lock up that long? She isn’t
short of space. She has the largest cage the
pet shop has to offer with a puppy pen attached
to the front. I feel so guilty keeping her
locked up when it’s so apparent she wants out.

Did the vet tell you explicitedly to keep her in? Because my vet after surgeries always told me that the bun has to lead a normal life (so, be let out if that’s the norm), with the exception that it mustn’t go outside to avoid soil and dirt to get in contact with the surgical wound.

I was advised to keep Buttercup somewhat confined (she’s free roam usually) for 10 days. She had a post op check after 5 days and although she was healing very well on the outside, I was advised to keep her restricted for a further 5 days to make sure her insides heal nicely,

The vet never said either way. I never even thought to ask. I have read online about limiting their space while they heal but not found for how long. She has been playing with her toys a little so can’t be that bored. She’s not free roam yet. We’re working towards that. We’ve had her 6 weeks. She’s normally out for around 7+ hours daily so definitely missing running round our feet in the evenings.

I think you could let her out of the cage, but keep it limited to a smaller room and don’t let her jump. I let Luna out of her cage on day 3, but I restricted her space to her room. After day 7, I increased her space to the room and hallway, then soon after I let her have her normal space back (the whole upstairs). However, I still didn’t let her jump up on things until after day 14.

You can let her out of her cage but the reason she needs limited space is so she doesn’t start running/jumping/binky-ing as that could cause harm. You could block off half a room maybe?

Thanks everyone. I’ve decided to just keep her in until she sees the vet again on Saturday. She’s started doing mini binkys in her pen so I’m certain if she gets any more space she’ll go nuts. I don’t want to take any risks. There’s plenty of space for me to sit in with her and get some good head rubs on the go.
