I feel like I waste so much hay if I’m throwing out what’s still in the hay rack or what’s been pulled out and left, do you need to change it everyday? Does it get gross if it’s left out longer? Or do you mix the day old hay with more fresh hay? Thanks in advance

I mix the hay, if I see that bandits hay is all stems I will remove all the stems he will just throw them around.

If the bun has peed or pooped on the “old” hay, I throw it out. If not, I let it sit. I take care not to give too big piles of hay because it seems more attractive to the bun if there’s not huge amounts of it. I place hay in several small piles around the bun area instead of just one. It actually gets less messy because the bun eats more and drag it around less. A little bit of hay goes in the littler box because a bun often likes to have a nibble while toileting – that hay I exchange often, of course.

I put hay in their litter boxes so every morning I dump out what’s left because I empty and clean the trays. So some hay gets wasted.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think I’ll start mixing fresh hay then, she might be more likely to finish the old stuff off lol

Hay that’s been pulled out onto the floor I just put back into the rack on top of the fresh stuff, if it’s been pulled out into the litter tray I toss it out. But I don’t throw out leftover hay in the rack or anything, since there’s nothing wrong with it. I just top up the rack, I don’t clean it out.
