I’m attempting to make a stuffed bunny. Is there a stronger or more durable hand sewing technique than the back stitch?

Granny knots should do the trick……

yes, but I don’t know the name in english! It’s like a normal stitch but before going down you pass the needle around the thread as if to make a knot (excellent explanation, I know…). Found this pic:

I think that’s called a saddle stitch?? (because it’s commonly used on leather as well)

I’m working with silk so I’m afraid it’ll bunch it up…

Well if you’re not planning to use straight up silk you can stitch right side to right side an inner lining of cotton and use the strong stitch, then turn inside out, stuff and insert into the final layer of good fabric. It would make the plushie washable too, which isn’t a bad thing

Straight up silk because it’s not a big bunny. But next time I might do the cotton lining

Then if it’s just silk I’m afraid only a small, tidy stitching with a very fine needle can be done. You can play with the kind of thread, though, and buy a super strong one ( pics when it’s done? )

Ok… this was the starting point: the free pattern I found and what the finished bun should look like. I opted for this one because it’s the simplest (fewest pieces) I could find.

Right away I learned a few things. 1) Go to a print shop and print the pattern on a piece of paper bigger than A4 (I have awful manual dexterity and the resulting pieces are small and difficult to work with for me). Next time I’ll have the printer make the pattern bigger and laminate it for me. 2) I hate tailor’s chalk – not sure if mine has wax in it instead of being pure clay, but it doesn’t mark well unless pressed hard enough to move the fabric. Gah! Next time, I’m going to buy carbon paper and a blunt tracing wheel (and maybe a wheel fabric cutter and cutting mat so I don’t feel like a total derp while using fabric scissors.)

And here are the pieces cut (hacked?) and pinned. I couldn’t find any J. James needles – next best I found were the black Clover ones. Couldn’t find thread wax either so I’ll be sewing with waxed dental floss.

I use regular chalk instead of taylor’s pencils/chalks <_< they never mark stuff as bright as I need them to. As for me when coming to sewing this kind of stuff, I print the pieces on regular paper and then trace it + add seam allowance on a piece of scrap cardboard (or on the inside of pasta boxes! those are perfect cardboard and perfect to store away) and later use that to trace on the fabric.

                          That pattern is so cute btw! the crotch area will be a pleasure to hand-sew… {sending sewing vibes}

I did do a plush bunny myself for when K was a baby, I wonder if I still have the pattern lying around…

Sadly that’s what I did – but since my max printer paper size is A4 and I have no free drawing skills…. piccolo lol

Well if you take apart the pattern on multiple pages it should work. I’m such a cheapskate that I’ve printed before medium-sized patterns on multiple A4 sheets

(sometimes I’m such a cheapskate that I trace by hand on tissue paper taped to the pc monitor or try to free hand it ahahah)

And here is the finished bun. It’s a shame iPad yellows the colours under electric lights. The back is a gorgeous navy silk and the ears turquoise and gold silk. Eyes dark brown, nails moss brown, nose skintone pink silk thread.

Lovely !!!! Well done you. If you take piccie on a white background, will it influence the ipad better ?
(Or… just turn your lights off !!!!)

Nope. No better. The ipad is affected by the overhead lights (it was night when I finished the bunny). Even my ancient phone has white balance controls, so I’m surprised Apple skimped on that.
