I have an almost 1 year old male mini lop who has not been neutered.I am thinking about getting him a bunny companion since many advise on having more than one bunny, and I can’t be around to play with him all the time due to work and other commitments. I was thinking about getting a male lionhead, but I realise this would more than likely mean I’d have to get one (or both?) neutered? However I’ve been very adamant about not getting Nap neutered since I’ve had (neutered) males previously who have become so docile and almost entirely lacking in personality as a result of it  He is lively and happy bun most of the time, perhaps sometimes grumpy and less affectionate than I’d hoped he be but never aggressive. I feel like he would hate me forever if I were to have him neutered. Please help!!

Neutering does not remove their personality it’s Been debated on /r/rabbits a lot and the only thing it curbs is sexual habits. It also increases his lifespan, my bandits going in tomarrow and I’m nervous but I haven’t noticed any behaviors and he’s really good.

With two unneutered rabbits they most likely will fight for territory and sometimes fight to the death, ive seen sad YouTube videos of unsuccessful bonds with unneutered males and it ends on serious injury or having to have one rabbit put down

Having a bun neutered isn’t going to get rid if his personality  You should neuter him because it will stop his chances of developing testicular cancer and will stop him feeling sexual urges that he cannot act upon. If you want to get him a friend, all should be neutered and spayed anyway. Even if not for the health benefits, removing hormones makes it possible to bond.

You cannot bond rabbits unless both have been spayed or neutered. Even if one of them is spayed or neutered, it still won’t work. You do need to wait a month after their surgeries before starting to bond them. Most rescues and many shelters will have rabbits that are already spayed and neutered. It is usually easier to bond a male with a female, neutered and spayed, of course, but you can bond same sex rabbits. Sometimes bonding doesn’t work and the rabbits just don’t get along and have to be kept separately forever. That is rare, but is does happen, so you need to be prepared for that and be able to have spaces to house them separately.

That’s what most people hope for in a bunny and don’t get…. lol.

Gina Jenny has an un neutered male (Podge) with a spayed female (she had the female before the male) so it ‘is’ possible (NEVER two unneutered males) but NOT recommended unless you can guarantee that he’ll not have constant urges on the poor spayed female….. which of course you can’t in advance.

And, if you get a spayed female and try to bond them as he is now and it goes pear shaped and dangerous for the buns, you’ll have ruined a good chance of them EVER bonding, even if later on you get your male bun neuteured…

So are you prepared to have two single buns ?

                Not that easy is it?

If that is yor boy in the avatar photo, he’s looovely. Much like BubbleJo’s very own Chester !

Thank you all! I will have Napoleon neutered and then think about adopting a spayed female as a companion once he is officially fixed (perhaps have him choose who he fancies lol). And yes that is my little Nap, cute am I right??? Cheers again
