Hello all, I’m quite concerned ’cause I’m relocating from Mexico City to Barcelona and my baby Marcelo would need to travel cargo in a direct flight from Cancun to Madrid (about 10hrs) And then we’ll drive to barcelona. He is 1yo… do you think he’ll make it?

Any recommendations? I’m freaking out even though I’m planning like 6months in advance!! D:

Depending on the airline, i believe most take good care of animals travelling in their care.
Of course it all depends on whether the animal is ok with the travelling, the noise and other stuff.
Contact the airline and get their advice on yout partcularly animal (bunny). If you get someone nice they should give you lots of tips from their experience. And get bun used to sleeping in his travelling crate as from now (or ASAP) so he is COMPLETELY at home in there and doesn’t stress more than necessary.

Animals are passengers too, so I think they will keep an eye on your bunny on the plane, let them know you are worried about him, I’m sure they are used to animals aboard, can they let him travel under a seat so he’s near you? You could ask if you can check him when the plane stops for changing pilots or staff if you can take a look at him, if you have enough time you could register him as a support animal if needs be, and they can’t refuse access to seat him with you, you could ask if you can see Marcelo board the plane with staff, but If you see the carrier being mishandled or left in a hot or noisy area for too long, tell a supervisor or a gate agent immediately, ask the crew to ask if Marcelo is on board, remind the crew bunny is on board, so the pilot doesn’t turn off the air cooling system to save fuel or power, you could tape your name, seat number and and mobile number to bunny’s carrier and keep your phone on until the last minute.

            Good Luck.

This is the list of airlines that will allow you to have a rabbit in the main cabin as long as you meet the kennel requirements. Always call first and see what their flights

Bandit: No airlines allow buns in cabin on international flights. I’ve tried every single one I could think of.

@ Q8bunny – incorrect, I just talked to the pilot service at Air Europoa and they allow cabin flights of small animals such as rabbits. Using 6 months as a guide in October there are 4 flights heading from Mexico city to Barcelona and according to their policy located here

                  https://www.aireuropa.com/airstatic/contents/animales_en.pdf

You can transport any animal in the cabin as long as it has proper paperwork filled and has a acceptable flight approved kennel. Flights from Mexico have no requirements for rabbits and flights into Spain have no limitations as well.

@ alexlovesmarcy – contact the booking information to get all the paperwork completed and follow their instructions exactly. Their website is located at
https://www.aireuropa.com and this army vet who has worked customs wishes you and your bunny a happy trip to Spain.

BC – that is very exciting news indeed….!! Just find a flight from Kuwait to… well, anywhere without sand (! LOL), and Q8 will be your new BEST friend…

Too true. I called every airline on the Wiki list plus a good deal more and every single one (including these guys), told me sorry but not permitted. Now I’m a bit pissed off… customers should be informed knowledgeably since pets are the kind of thing that, you know… MATTER

Almost will say no bit when you read their policy back to them they HAVE to abide by it. The only thing that overturns this policy is the arriving animal policy such as Mexico which prohibits any animal in the cabin. Spain does not have this policy

I’m screwed either way, since I live in Kuwait. We’re looking at a seat on a private charter in two years’ time.

Private charter is a valid option and the more you split it the easier it becomes. By yourself it’s a pretty scary chunk of change.

Yep. But I’d gladly spend a decade’s worth of savings on one flight if it means getting my little guy safely to wherever we decide to settle down.

Thanks for the help guys! I talked to the airline called WAMMOS air and guess what?! He will be able to travel with me in the cabin actually it’s pretty cool cause I’m taking my cat on cabin as well, they are quite flexible. So I’m a bit less nervous now, Marcelo’s travelled long distances by car already and he really doesn’t mind, he is a quite chill bunny so I hope he’ll be OK.

Anyways, thanks so much for your advice and I’ll keep you posted!

Please don’t register bunnies as support animals if they are not. Please, please, please. It might make it easier for you, but it makes it much harder for other people who actually need their pets as ESA.

Also, I’m glad everything’s all worked out! Good luck on your flight!!

If someone wants to qualify their animal as an ESA that is their business, a licenced medical professional and a certification board will make the decision for qualification. There are infinate esa licensed and as long as the animal can be accommodated there is no issue.

Indeed, bunnies being placed with the cargo is a rabbit owner’s worst nightmare. We travel by train often with our bun, but he really wants to be held during the trip because he’s a bit overwhelmed by it all. If the train service is disrupted for some reason the railways will replace it with bus travel. We’re pretty adamant about it: we’d rather walk to the next station than having Breintje chucked into the freight department.

I understand that! But to certify an animal as an ESA support animal just to get a shortcut truly makes it worse for people who do have ESA animals and need them. I have a lot of friends with service animals and ESA animals, and none of them are taken seriously because of the people who abuse the system. There are also websites who offer quick ESA certification that many places accept, but the animal has gone through no training and there’s no guarantee the person needs that animal as an ESA.
There’s no judging here for people who do certify their buns as ESA animals– I have many friends who have done that, and their animals are part of their therapy. But to certify an animal just for shortcuts is wrong, but unfortunately, very common.
Sorry if there was any miscommunication in my original post!

That’s the thing with ESA though is that there is no training requirement. It’s just a license by the department of agriculture that states that your ESA animal is well behaved (doesn’t bite) wont cause a public disturbance and all its shots are current. ESA is a pretty big step to realizing that animals are people too and have as much rights as we do. But enough thread hijacking

I don’t mind the fact that there is no formal training required for an ESA (even though I think requiring a Good Citizen Test would be appropriate if it’s a dog). After all, they provide emotional support, not necessarily anything else. But as SeeShmemilyPlay said, people can get a certification online, and obviously in those cases no one would have actually evaluated the animal or whether or not that person actually needs an ESA. I think that part gets overlooked a lot, because it’s of course hard to prove/disprove if someone would legitimately benefit from an ESA, and actually has psychological issues crippling enough that they cannot function in public on their own. You can buy a vest for your pet on ebay that says “Service Animal” or something similar, and lots of times it’ll get you where you want to go because people are afraid to ask for the proper documentation, or don’t really know what to look for in the first place. It’s a flawed system, and unfortunately very easy to take advantage of.

To the op: I’m glad you will be able to take your bun into the cabin with you! It will be much less stressful for you both.
