For the last week or so, Peanut has been quite scared of the usual cooking noises. He has always been scared of the sound of eggs frying for example but now he seems scared of all hob noises such as boiling potatoes. He also gets extra cautious when cooking pizza and things like that. Is there anything I can do to help him not feel so worried? I’m pretty sure the smell of garlic makes him a little nervy too. Tips to overcome this? Thanks guys!

Is there any chance that when you cook, you could move him out of the room if that is ok with you. What does he do when you cook? What s his behavior.

Mine isn’t afraid of the noises as much as the smells and the eventual smoke (and the people, if I have guests). When I cook I always keep the area ventilated and it helps him a bunch, cause the smells don’t linger around.

Not really, our living room and kitchen is open plan so there’s nowhere we could move him unless we moved him upstairs but that would be far too stressful for him (they can go upstairs but he hasn’t dared venture up there yet) He tends to sort of tip toe around, walk very slowly and just generally look a little nervous. Sometimes he’ll hide out under the sideboard.

I definitely think smell is one factor so I’ll try opening all windows as we’re cooking and see if that helps. Thanks for the tip!

Maybe a radio for background noise?

I was about to suggest a radio too, sudden loud cooking houses like frying or boiling could scare them. A background noise would help like soft music nothing crazy

We usually have the TV on for background noise and it doesn’t make a huge difference when it comes to cooking unfortunately

Maybe try dymystifying the cooking process. Whenever I do something new or loud I talk and comfort bandit as much as possible
