Lately, my female bunny has been growling at her brother who is the submissive one and she the dominant, and I’m kinda concerned. I’ll elaborate. My bunnies love to hide under my bed, and my male bunny sometimes accidentally scares my female by unintentionally sneaking up behind her. She doesn’t react as I wish she would. She flings herself around to see who bumped her, and when she sees it was her brother, she starts to make an unnerving noise that sounds much like growling. I don’t understand what this is or what its purpose is, nor do I know if it is bad for the pair, as they are strongly bonded. Maybe it isn’t of any importance, but I figured it was worth asking about at least. Thanks for your help!

I see on your profile that they are both fixed, good. What did you do to bond them? How did you determine that their bond was cemented?

Note that there could be something medically wrong if their bond is cemented and if this is a relatively new habit for her

She’s been doing this for a while now, since June-ish of last year, and we just let them be together until their fixing surgery was over and their wounds healed. They really seem to care for each other and often exchange grooming. They also snuggle in a safe box in their hutch together and cuddle together in the winter to keep warm. I really hope that she isn’t sick or something. I wouldn’t want to lose them or even one of them before I’ve owned them even for one year! She doesn’t seem sick at all though. Just the usual amount of feces and urine and she sure does have an appetite! I’ve owned them since April 12th of 2016.

My bunny Yohio growled at me if I startled him. The next second he put his chin on the floor for me to pet him. He growled like a small, angry dog. He was extremely cuddly, spent as much time as he could under my foot when I sat at my writing-desk, but when startled, he always growled. It could perhaps be sth a dominant bun does.

I agree with Bam. I think she is startled, and is telling him to knock it off. Spike growls at me (every time he chews on a barrier I have) when I touch his butt to get him to stop. He will do the quick turn around thing too. I believe it is an interruption of her focus, scares her and annoys her, and she is being scary back. Growling is not an unusual noise for a bunny. Take it as a warning and statement of disapproval.

I wouldn’t assume illness without other indications. If they are otherwise behaving as bonded, I think you can take it as a successful bonding. But watch for any signs of new, more aggressive behavior like missing fur on either bunny. Growling followed by lunging would be more serious.

My bun Jude is and has always been the sassy one. She growls at me or my husband if we’re trying to get her to do something that she doesn’t want to do or sometimes when we try to take food or something she’s chewing from her. It never goes further than growling though. Sometimes she makes the sound of a villager on Minecraft if she’s upset also. Sounds like a loud attention seeking sigh ?

Oddly enough RabbitPam, the male does have a lot of missing fur on his head and the female does sometimes lunge at him after growling several times. For more information on his hair loss, you can go to my profile, and see my topics started. It will be under One Bunny Grooming Another Bunny Too Much? or something like that. Thanks for the info!

I find bunny growls hilarious. I must admit though, I was taken aback when I first heard my 1st rabbit Jersey do it.

@KittenMuffinPie, your profile pic is adorable!
