My bunny pongo loves to dig in blankets towels carpet everything possible he gets really bored in his cage so I want to create some type of digging box for him I was thinking about just getting a card board box and filling it up with soil? But would the soil be toxic to him or what kind of soil would I have to get?

I would suggest sand. A simple box, with some sand in it.. haven’t done one myself, but, years ago, I had a friend who kept free range bunnies, and, she had a small baby pool of sand, and I recall how often her buns would gather in there, and dig til they were content.. seems like such a fun idea to me.

I made one out of a wooden box (a wine case from work), and a bag of topsoil I got in the garden centre. Tony loves it.

I have read not to use sand. There was an old thread here where a vet advised against it, and I’ve seen it mentioned elsewhere as potentially dangerous. They could likely get it in their eyes, and it would be a major eye irritant. It could be a lung irritant, with the digging causing all that fine dust to be inhaled. It could also cause impaction if ingested. If you do use soil, make sure that it doesn’t have any fertilizer or anything else added.

I’m not sure a cardboard box would last long, but any other type (solid) box would be fine. Mine use a biiig square high sided plastic plant pot. It only needs a few inches of soil in it or you’ll find they spray it EVERYWHERE !!!! Lol. Its like they dig vertically !!

Hi. I have indoor bunnies. I use a plastic laundry basket with a blanket in it. Lucy loves to dig dig dig. And rearrange the blanket! I check it every once and awhile and it’s got little holes, but nothing big (she’s not eating it) and hasn’t peed or pooped on it. It’s saved my couch and favorite throw blankets for sure!

I have a sand box for Aurora that she loves to dig in, and flop in. There’s never been any problems with it. Fine, dusty sand would not be good, so I think it must depend on which sand you choose. She doesn’t have the sand box every day.

Jake has a diggy box filled with old hay and bits of brown packing paper! Maybe try that?

I’m thinking about a dig box for bandit, he’s really well mannered and doesn’t eat things he shouldn’t (he moves the curtains and rearranges) my only worry is between sand or topsoil. The reason I worry about sand is because I’m afraid it might get in his coat and he might groom himself and ingest it. Same can he said for cecotropes. . .
