Hi, everyone! I will be a NEW rabbit owner very soon (within a month) so I am very excited! Because the basement of my house is BY FAR the coolest in the spring/summer, our bun will be staying there until it becomes Fall/Winter. Because I usually don’t venture to the basement TOO often, I was wondering which hours during the day exactly your bunny wakes up at?! I want to know what time I should head down to the basement and spend a few hours there doing work and spending time with the bunny. (By the way my dad works in the basement so he will be there almost 24/7 so bun will not be completely alone). I was thinking of going down there at 8AM for a few hours and then maybe go downstairs again at around 4PM for another couple hours? And of course pop in every now and then in between to check up on the bunny I don’t think I can sleep there overnight though ): please give me any advice!

Wick is up 4-6AM, then about 4-9PM. Longer in the afternoon/evening because that’s when I’m free to give him the most attention!

Mine are up from about 6 ish to around 9 in the morning. They come alive again after about 7pm (veggie time) and tend to settle when we go to bed which can be anywhere from 9:30 to 11pm.

Bam is on much the same schedule as Sarah’s buns.

Blue tends to wake everyone up around 7am to 8am, naps on and off until he finally heads to bed around 10pm to 11pm

There’s a reason your bunnies are active during those hours. Bunnies are Crepuscular, which means most active and alert at dawn and dusk. (Other animals are called Nocturnal – awake at night, and Diurnal – awake all day.) Bunnies are prey animals in their DNA, so they evolved to be eating and playing at those times because the sun is lower in the sky outside. When that happens, it’s harder for the bigger wild animals to see them, and they are much safer.

Our house bunnies still have that programmed into their systems, so as you get up with the dawn, so do they. You may see your bunnies digging around the house. They are foraging. Later, in the early evening, they are ready to come out to play and eat again. They get a deep sleep in midday and again in the middle of the night. So if you work, say, from 9-5, or close to it, don’t worry about leaving your bunny alone. They are getting a good sleep while you’re gone, after having breakfast and playing with you first. They greet you for supper and more play when you get home. Leaving them unlimited hay and water means they can snack now and then when they are awake. They don’t eat everything all at once. They like to graze.

As we know, they are the perfect pet!

That’s really interesting, thanks for the explanation Pam!
