Danish and Cadbury have bonded so tightly over their short lives. When I take them out, Danish, the timid, shy female follows Cadbury, the stronger male. We’re giving away Cadbury, the male(for obvious reasons) and I dont know what to do?! They’re so close and she’s so shy without him. He’s more energetic and she’s very laid back. We can’t get another cage and we can’t get him neutered right now. What do we do to elevate her loss?

Dear Lilo, are you sure you can’t get another cage? Maybe a second hand one off of Craig’s list or sth? Then they could still be in the same room but not within mating- and fighting-distance. Then you could perhaps save up to get Cadbury neutered. It would be the kindest thing for them both, bonded rabbits shouldn’t be split up unless it’s absolutely necessary.

I agree with Bam. I think it is sad to split up bonded rabbits.

Besides Craig’s List, you might be able to get a cage for free off of Freecycle. If you are not familiar with Freecycle, it is a site where people post things they have to give away for free, and others post the things that they need. The site was started to keep usable items out of landfills and to help people who may not be able to afford certain items. There are chapters of Freecycle all over the country.

You also may be able to get a free cage from a rabbit rescue if there is one near you. At the Sanctuary where I volunteer, people bring their rabbits in cages, but we don’t use them afterwards, since we house our rabbits differently. The rescue would appreciate a small donation if you did get a cage from them. Or they may know of some place that you could get a free or low cost cage.
