Hello! My Bunny’s name is Snow White and she just turned a year old in February. For the past couple weeks I have been closely watching a bald spot between her shoulders grow bigger and bigger. At first I thought she may be over-grooming, as she does that a lot, but reading further information around has led me to think she may have ear mites or mites in her fur. Her ears do bother her a lot, but I can only see what looks like ear wax. I am definitely going to schedule an appointment with the vet for Thursday or Friday. How can I tell until then? What can I do to help with her ears? Thanks!!!

There’s not a lot you can do yourself if it’s mites, the best meds are prescription only in most places exept Australia (Revolution and ivermectin). Do you see dandruff/skin flakes on the balding spot? Is the skin somewhat course and uneven? Some say brushing is relieving for the bunny, because it gets rid of some of the mites, but do that in the bathroom and clean everything thoroughly after, because the brushed-off mites can go “hide” in the environment and you obviously don’t want that.

A growing balding spot between the shoulderblades is as you say a hallmark of cheyletiella mites (fur mites). The bun often gets them from her mum when she’s a baby and carries them in small numbers until conditions are favorable enough for them to start to really multiply. Luckily they are very sensitive to selamectin and ivermectin.

There is no dandruff. Only one small flake in one corner. It looks exactly like the fur mite pictures. The skin is pink and soft, nothing really unusual.

Thanks for your help! I will schedule her an appointment today for Friday!

Do these meds cost a lot? (not that it matters because I will be getting them anyway), just wondering

              Thanks!

Revolution is not bad. I think I paid about $20 us per dose
