I seriously think Leopold was hit in the head while we were gone. He has suddenly started digging in the litter box. I mentioned it in the chat thread, but now I’m growing concerned. He is 7 years old. He has NEVER dug in the litter box. And it isn’t just a little bit of digging. He is OBSESSED! He will dig at it for hours, completely empty the contents of the box onto the floor and then dig the bare plastic. I lifted up the litter box and he just got mad and dug at the floor. I don’t get it. I really don’t. Something weird happened while we were gone because we was acting normal before we left.

Maybe he thinks that there is a portal to another universe in his litter box.

I’m perplexed too when I see my bun frantically digging at the bare tiled floor in the middle of the room.
“But there is nothing there, Bill! What are you digging at?!”
Bill: I must get to the other world that only I can see!

Sorry, I’ve just watched Donnie Darko..

LB, my bun thought digging litterbox, was glorious fun too… much to my dismay O.o not sure about your current litter box, but, mine, is a high back, large size corner litter pan. — Yoyo, would get so determined, to empty it out, into his pen.. it was driving me batty.. he loved it tho.. One thing, I tried, out of sheer frustration was this – I stuck a log of firewood, just in front of the litterpan, .. heavy enough, he couldn’t just toss it out of the way, but high enough, that he couldn’t dig/scoop his litter, out of the box onto the floor.
Its not the most decorative idea that I have ever had, lol, but.. it seems to work, and, has ruined his interest in digging the box out at least. Just an idea, I pass on along to you.. maybe it could work for you too?

Have you tried replacing his litterbox with a diggy box and see if he uses the litterbox in a different spot?

Maybe he’s punishing you for being gone!

They have a good sized cat litter box. I did put a dig box in the room. Leopold ignored it. There was pee in it, but I think that was Wooly since Leopold monopolizes the litter box.

                  Q8- that’s an interesting suggestion.

…i have the same problem for a week now ?
My bunny Lexi used to be so quiet and sweet but just a week ago she started digging like crazy for hours! Same thing, she would dig all the litter out until she reached the plastic bottom of the cage.
I can’t sleep with her digging all night…

                    What would i do? ?

It might be a symptom of spring fever, now that I think of it…

Maybe Leopold did it once in response to you going and he got used to it… and he thought “hey THIS is what buns are supposed to do!”…

Is it just a male bun thing or do girls do it too ?

Zou does not dig at all. Henry has just spent ALL dawn digging frantically and obsessively in a new box i put in their condo, in theory to use as a step up to the next level…. he digs (manically) at it and nibbles at it alternately. He stops when i give him something to eat. Have i unwittingly conditionned him to do this by feeding them once just during his dig-athon? Who knows, but it sure is the behaviour i’d like see disappear.

Digging in spring can be a male thing, but actually constructing a warren is a girl bunny thing. In spring, the wild bunnies here dig useless holes-not-deep-enough-to-be-holes in many, many places. It’s like they just dig aimlessly a bit, then hop away to the next spot a few yards away and dig a bit there (aimlessly). Fresh “holes” every day. It’s like that every spring.

That’s because they’re crossed with squirrels and are looking for their nuts !!

Ahhhhhh!! It’s male neuteured rabbits that do it – that’s why !!!!!!!!!!!!! ROFL !!!

All three girls do, none of the boys. I’d put it down to the female instinct to build a burrow…

I came home to find the litter box moved, but the litter still inside it. I was really mean and only put enough in there to make a thin layer on the bottom. Less litter means less to pick up off the floor, right? :p They were both eating hay when I got home too. Everything is peaceful…. until tonight! o_O

UPDATE: Well, things are better (knock on wood). LOL My husband put the baseboard trim back on, so we were able to take the fence down (it was to keep them away from the raw drywall edge). I washed the rug that goes under the litter box. Then I put the litter box down with minimal litter in it and an empty litter box right next to it and put hay in that. This morning there was a little bit of litter and poop on the floor, but it looked like it was the result of jumping in and out of the box. They were relatively quiet last night too, but I did take their “loud toys” away. *sigh* Why are they so weird?
