So my bunny Luna has had problems with her front leg, it bend all the way back when she runs and just looks so uncomfortable. I took her to the vets and she didn’t know what it was, so asked an expert. He said it looked like ‘flying scapula’, which is extremely rare and usually seem in farm animals. The vet said there is no way to be 100% sure, unless she gets an X-ray.

After the X-ray, if it is what she thinks it is, she might need an amputation… My problem is money. Does anyone know how expensive an X-ray or amputation is going to be? I understand that having a rabbit requires having the finances, but I wasn’t expecting this! If I have to have both of them, I’m going to be broke! My dad said to get her put down, but I don’t want to give up on her that easily!

Any advice what so ever would be very appreciated!!

No idea how much it would cost – don’t you have insurance? You might be able to work out a payment plan. I’m sorry but if it comes down to it, either accept being broke for a while or surrender her to a shelter. Having her put down as your dad suggests is unnecessary and quite evil tbh when there are other options.

I live in Michigan, U.S., and Luna’s x-ray at her vet was around $85.00. I don’t know how much an amputation costs, and hopefully your bun won’t need one, but if she does I think it costs less than you would think. Although an amputation involves surgery, the vet only needs to remove the limb, so there really shouldn’t be any extensive or corrective work involved in the surgery. The quicker and easier the surgery, the less money it should cost. On the other hand, there might be more after-care costs throughout Luna’s life compared to buns with 4 legs.
Amputation is a big deal, so I would consider getting a second opinion. If the surgery is too expensive, then I would try to find a rescue so that they can re-home her or something instead of putting her down.

No, she’s only 7 months old I hadn’t sorted it all out yet because I stupidly thought I had time. I don’t want to put her down either, so the shelter is a good last option! It’s not the fact I’d be broke, it’s the fact I have to pay bills and rent and I don’t know if I physically cannot afford anything over £1000 at most! The vet I visited was saying £300 just for an X-ray! So I’m thinking of getting a second opinion.

I just want her to have a good quality of life. I would just leave her the way she is, but I know she’s in pain. The vet I saw said it would cost £300 just for an X-ray! So maybe I should get a second opinion. But I’ve been told rabbit’s cope quite well with 3 legs, and to be honest, that’s my only option. The condition is rare, and doesn’t go away on it’s own, and can’t be fixed with surgery. So amputation is kind of the last idea any of us have.

Oh my, the fact that she’s only a baby and your dad wants her put down is even worse

I’m glad you are prepared to take her to a rescue rather than euthanize her. Many animals cope well with a missing limb, especially at such a young age they can adjust well. As mentioned before, you could try and discuss a payment plan.

I think you need a second opinion. A winging scapula is caused by nerve damage, lesions, or swelling. If this is indeed what she has, she likely experienced trauma to her spine. Depending on how bad it is, there may be other treatments besides amputation.

Really?! She hasn’t told me of any other options, do you know any??

I’d call all of the vets in your area and ask how much an X-ray is. It’s free to just call and ask! In my area, at one vet it’s $30, and down the street it’s $500. I’d call multiple places!
