The viny house plant from you-know-where.

My newly adopted lionhead mix doe was roaming around today and totally got up on the coffee table and into my philodendron plant!!

I was so shocked when I caught her munching away on leaves. It appears 2-3 leaves have been browsed. I know it’s a toxic plant and called the vet asap. They told me to give her plenty of fresh greens and water to help dilute the poison and to call back if she showed any symptoms of poisoning/ starts salivating around her mouth. Internet says swelling of tongue, possibly enough to restrict airways, and to expect diarrhea and upset stomach until it passes.

SO MANY CUSS WORDS RIGHT NOW!! It’s the waiting game and I’m flipping out! Seriously hoping this night doesn’t end up in a trip to the bunny ER

Keeping my fingers crossed for her and you. It’s not a strong poison but calcium oxalate crystals that embed into the mucosa and can cause a good deal of (temporary but relatively long lasting, ie hours) pain in the mouth plus GI upset.

So far I guess we’re in the clear? I gave her half a tomato slice- I knew the acids in tomatoes break down calcium and after learning it was insoluble calcium that causes the toxic irritants in the plant I figured it was worth a shot. She has been chilling, kind of grooming herself more than normal but otherwise she seems normal. She has urinated/defecated normally in the litter box so it either wasn’t enough to hurt her or it hasn’t processed out of her system yet. Not sure how long it will take to digest. Since nothing horrendous has happened yet and it’s been a few hours, I feel confident I can go to bed without having to call the vet back tonight. Kinda scary haha. That plant got moved to the top of a bookshelf at this!! The only problem I foresee now might be urination? I know rabbits urinate out unused calcium. Hope it doesn’t cause any stones/issues on that end. Still, I think we are broaching the safety zone so that is good.

              Thanks for the support.

She did not get sick thankfully. I’m really glad she didn’t even show symptoms of stress. Sorry for the delayed response- I started a new job this month and it’s great! But keeps me busyyy haha
