So, I currently own a Flemish Giant buck who is 2.5 years old, and I got him neutered around 6 months old. Now, I’m looking into adopting a bunny to bond with him. I found two up for adoption in my area, and am having trouble picking which one would be easier to bond with him: a 1.5 year old neutered male, or a 5-year-old unneutered male.

The owner of the 5-year-old rabbit even offered to pay to neuter him, but I know that can be risky for older bunnies. So my questions are, do you think it would be feasible to try to bond all 3 bunnies together? And if I do adopt the 5-year-old, should I have him neutered or is he too old? His owner says he is calm and very friendly with other bunnies, and since he’s a “senior” perhaps he won’t have the same aggressive tendencies as younger non-neutered buns.

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

You will not be able to bond an unneutered rabbit with another rabbit, even if the other rabbit is neutered. A 5 year old rabbit should be able to be neutered. At 5 years old, he is not a senior yet, although most people spay and neuter rabbits when they are younger. With older rabbits, the vet will likely perform blood tests first to check liver function, and give a general checkup to make sure that he is healthy. I adopted a 4 year old from the local shelter a couple of years ago, and they neutered him with no problem.

Age doesn’t matter so much when it comes to bonding, it is the rabbit’s personality which is the bigger factor.

Bonding can be easy at times, but it can also be difficult. If you have never bonded rabbits before, it might be best to start with two, instead of trying to bond a trio.

Yes and no. My neutered male was bonded with my unspayed female, but I got her when she was much older (8-9 or so). At the time, I told myself she couldn’t be spayed either (looking back now, I should have done it anyway!). The two of them bonded perfectly well.

When I went to pick up my new bun from the shelter today, they told me they’d fixed both buns in a seven year old pair. It does happen, though I guess not as frequently.

Can you find a spayed female in your area? I know I had to check several agencies before I found what I was looking for.
