Our iris pet pens arrived – I’m petrified of bar spacing after my hay ball accident yesterday
It’s 1.25″ spacing is it ok? Am I over worrying ?
Anyone else use this pen before ?

lol, Oak – It looks like a fine spacing indeed to me! Don’t fret any,. unless your buns have particularly large heads, like, say, a flem xD

My buns bars, are on a child proof metal gate – he can stick his head through the bars, but, nothing else… I’d say – if you notice any of your buns, getting no more then their head through, all will be well,.. but,.. if you see them getting anything past the head through… – personally, I would be concerned. – heck, my bun, spends half of his time eating his food OUTSIDE of his pen, but, by sticking his head inside of the bars, from the outside, to snack on his tasty treats lol

Grats on the new xpen ! Hope it all works well for you guys!

ETA — I didn’t read about the incident yesterday,.. my apologies,.. I hope all is well!!

He got his head partially into the hay ball ( from nose till just before his eyes) amd got wedged and nearly hung himself we worked for 10 mins to free him. I’m not worried about him getting out .., I’m worried his head will get wedged

Oh my stars!!! 😮 – was this from the new pen that you just posted about? — I’m so sorry to hear that he went thru that, love! – How stressful, that must have been! — I suppose now would be a good a time as any to say that I think my bun is on the smallish side lol
I hope everything ended well at least! * bunny hugs *

I suppose there is the potential he could get his little head stuck in there, he is still quite small. If you’re overly concerned, I would simply attach some wire mesh across the lower half of the pen panels to make the spacing smaller until he’s grown up a little and has a adorable chubby head that won’t fit through

My guy is very small too
It was a hay ball – the hanging type you fill with hay

I’m too scared to leave him in there till I get some more opinions on the spacing so I let him have a play and popped him back in his cage

A very cheap, but efficient solution would be to wire in some chicken coop wire inside the pen bars.. its so easy to cut through it with plain pair of scissors, and, you can basically cut it into any shape you want.
Worth a shot, to keep his little head out of the bars for the time being. <3 Its hard to put a price tag, on peace of mind, after all.

Hey OM . It seems like the spacing of cage bars is generally 1.25″ as a (U.S.) standard, so hopefully the manufacturers have researched/tested the safety of such spacing and determined that 1.25″ is ok. It’s good that it is a lot smaller in width than the 1.7″ spacing of the wire ball that poor Oak got his head stuck in. That being said though, I do really like the suggestions of the mesh wiring on the lower part of the bars until Oakley grows a little bit more. I’ve looked at wiring in the past for an outdoor run for Luna, and here are some tips for looking at different types offered at Home Depot or Lowes:
Category: welded wire or hardware cloth or mesh wire or woven wire
Material: galvanized steel (metal) or polypropylene
Gauge: diameter/thickness of wire; the higher the gauge the sturdier the wiring. 10 gauge is really thick/heavy (ie. dog enclosures), 16 gauge is not as thick but still secure (ie. cats/rabbits), 22 gauge is thin/light (ie. poultry). While you probably don’t need something as heavy as a 10 gauge, just remember that as the number of the gauge increases, the plyability of the material also increases.
Size: Generally manufactured at 2ft-4ft x 5ft-15ft with mesh size at 1″ x 2″ (they do sell mesh as small as 1/4″ x 1/2″)
Price: $5.00 – $40.00 depending on material, gauge, and size

                              How would I attach it?
And I would have to put it in the outside not inside I guess as he jumps off step stool and hideaways ect and I wouldn’t want him catching himself on the top
I also have little kids with autism and balance issues so the wire mesh makes me nervous if there is any sharp edges

I’m also thinking I may be over paranoid as I can’t see anywhere on the net where a bunny got head stuck in iris pen – Amazon alone there are many pens when bunnies heads got stuck and horrific reviews on some pens – but not one on this pen so I guess I’m prob paranoid – but knowing I probably am is not going to make me stop lol! That hay ball experience really was horrific

It should be ok since his head got stuck in 1.7″ and the pen is 1.25″ but I know I’d be paranoid too!

You could put little deer/moose antlers on him! No way will he squeeze his cute little head into anything with those.

Chicken wire can be attached with the endings you cut off, it’s very pliable. I’d attach it to the outside of the cage, wrap the wire endings around the cage bars and then bend them back out again and twist them. You don’t want him to hurt himself on the wire endings. I think it’s best to attach the netting to the outside because that would perhaps be less tempting for him to chew. Bunnies can chew through chicken wire no problem, so if you want bunny safe netting, you should use welded square netting, and attach it with cable ties.

And then when the little darling grows up and becomes a bigger darling, you just take away the netting.

See it’s hard to tell exactly the measurement he was stuck in – in the moment it was panic – but from what I can recall it seemed about the 1.75 point of the ball he went through ( I’ve measured the space at point I THINK it happened and that’s 1.75″) and when he tried to pull out he pulled down so he ended up in a narrower part he couldn’t get out of

The cuteness! Had to scroll back up again just to have another look at him =)

Not sure if this is helpful but my bunnies are in a metal pen and I noticed that when I was out they were pushing it forward and making an attempt to bite my rug which was a few feet away. I was worried that they were to forcibly pushing their heads on the bottom bars and I was scared they would hurt themselves. I’ve used some of those willow edging roles that you can get for gardens to line around the bottom of the whole pen. I’ve just cable tied them and made sure the wire endings have been secured to the outside where the buns can’t get to them. They are working great for me at the moment as it’s also giving them something to chew. I just make sure I make regular checks on them for sharp pieces etc

Unfortunately we can’t get willow here and aren’t allowed to import it from Amazon etc either
