Since yesterday Mr Rabbit has seemed to have a bloated belly. It feels harder than usual and he will nut let me touch it when I try to massage. Sometimes he appears to hunch, too. However… he is eating and drinking as normal and will explore/play regularly. He also lies down okay and rests his head on the floor. What could possibly be the matter? Am I overreacting? Will be visiting vet if this continues but wanted advice from you guys before anything. Thanks so much from me and the buns.

It could be gas. I’d try simethicone. I’d not massage a bloated belly, but it’ good if he moves around and if you can gently elevate his butt a bit to help gas escape. You can give 1 ml of baby gas drops, it often acts within half an hour.

Keep a close eye on appetite, poop and general demenour.

Thanks a lot bam. We are trying simethicone for the first time. I am worried I may have given him a bit too much – He had approx 125mg mashed with pellets (this stuff was granulated), which he finished most of but not all. Will be keeping a very close eye on him. He is eating and drinking as normal so far.

125 mg sounds ok, I give 0,5-1 ml of a 100 mg/ml solution. Repeat after one hour. The strenght varies between brands, some are 20 mg/ml others 40, the type I most often use is 100. It’s not absorbed by the body but acts locally in the gut, and then it comes out with the poop. For this reason it’s difficult to overdose by mistake.

Eating and drinking normal is great, of course =)

Great, we are seeing some improvement. More comfortable sitting positions and softer belly, not hard like it was before. Not totally out of the woods so before bed we will give him another dose. He let me massage him this time and I felt the bubbles moving around as I did it. Thanks : )
