        Hi everyone!

I came back from vacation yesterday and picked up my sweet, little bun from my Aunt’s house. When I dropped him off, all seemed well. He explored her house and was as snuggly as ever. But I guess he got stressed about the situation as the week went on and became more aggressive towards her. I was sure to give specific food instructions but looking back believe I provided a few too many strawberries and broccoli.

Now that he is home his poops are a lot smaller than normal and he is more aggressive towards me. He seems to be drinking fine and i cut back on his pellets. He has never been big into hay (no matter what type or brand I’ve tried) but seems to be eating his normal amount. However, he tends to just sit under my kitchen table (which is pretty normal for him) and binky and run less and less.

I’m worried that this is GI stasis. Once he calms down will it go away? I have started to give him tummy massages and will continue to monitor him closely. I feel awful and just want him to be happy and healthy.

Also can anyone give me a general/average price for what a vet bill would be for this?

        Thank you all so much!

It sounds like he is just mad at you and his excess of sweets and broccoli is bothering his system. This might turn into GI Stasis, but I have no experience with that. I live near a very populated area so rabbit bills are not too expensive. A check up is around $55 here, and not sure about the medication

It sounds like you are catching it early, which is good. I think it is a personal call whether to wait and see if a better diet (no strawberries or broccoli!) and less stress brings improvement, or his condition worsens. I would plan on $200-300 for treatment. It could vary a lot though based on what your vet finds and what medications or tests are prescribed. If he gets worse, I think you really have to take him in though regardless of the cost.

If he won’t eat hay, it might be worth looking into Sherwood rabbit food or a different extra high fiber pellet. I would also try different types of hay (or even fresh grass) and see if you can find something he prefers. I would also try to make sure he is getting plenty of water, maybe by wetting any greens you give him. You can also try giving him some Bene-bac or infant gas drops.

Decreasing size of poop is as you’re saying a possible early sign of GI stasis. It can also be just a reversible gut slowdown accompanied by gas. Too much broccoli or other cabbage-type vegs can cause gas in sensitive individuals. An individual that normally tolerates broccoli can be more sensitive due to stress, f ex the stress of being in a new environment or when routines are broken. Gas is very painful for bunnies and would explain his aggression and unwillingness to binky like he normally does.

Very light tummy massages are good, also try and elevate the bunny’s rear so gas can escape easier. Many bun-owners including myself like to give baby gasdrops (simethicone) for suspected cases of gas. Dana Krempel abnd Medirabbit say it can be given on suspicion alone. (To actually confirm gas, you need an x-ray). Simethicone is not absorbed by the body but acts locally ijn the intestines and is expelled with the poop. 1 ml per hour for 3 hours is the suggested dosage. It very often helps within 20-30 minutes.

It’s really great that he’s drinking a lot. Cutting back on pellets might not be the way to go, because you want him to eat. If he eats more hay when he gets less pellets it’s fine, but you don’t want his tummy to go empty.

How does his ear feel? Very cold ears could mean he’s got a low temp. That’s very bad for a bun, and he could need warming up.

I can’t give you any idea about cost of a vet visit, it varies greatly depending on where you are. If you tell us what country/general area your are in, someone here might have some idea. Unless the bun needs hospitalization and it’s daytime and a weekday, a vet as a rule takes an X-ray of the abdomen, gives (warmed) fluids sub-q and perhaps a painkiller and a gut stimulant, and none of that is necessarily crazy expensive.

I’m not a vet, so I can’t tell you what you should do, but when my buns have been in a similar situation, I’ve always started with the gas drops. They can be surprisingly effective.

Do you think it is safe to keep feeding him romaine lettuce? and cut out other veggies?

His ears are warm and he seems to be a little less mad at me.

I’m glad to hear about the ears and his temper! Romaine lettuce is perhaps the safest of all vegs a bun can get, so I think you can keep feeding him that. It’s not known to cause gas or other GI problems. It’s often recommended as a first veg to baby buns at veggie-intro-time.
