Hi, I got a new girl on Wednesday night, so three days ago. I have noticed her poos are very soft messes. She is young 3-4 months and I am new rabbit owner looking for some advice. My boy has never had poops like that, his are healthy round balls. I looked at the guide that you have and I think it is the poos associated with stress and poor diet. The food I was given for her that she was being fed at her previous home was a dried tropical fruit mix with some pellets mixed in. I have been switching her over to just pellets, but I thought I would keep mixing it for a few days to transition her. Some of her poops are normal, but some are these soft masses. She is young and I think the move stressed her out, a completely new environment. She seems happy, she binkies quite a lot, but she does seem like quite an anxious rabbit, lots of digging, it takes her awhile to seem relaxed. I think she smells my boy too. I am going to take her to get her registered at the vet soon, but I am just curious from more experienced owners, if it is stress, how long does it take to settle down? and/or does it not sound like stress and should I take her into the vet right away???

It does sound like intermittent soft cecotropes. It’s not a veterinary emergency. It’s as a rule caused by a poor diet. “Treatment” is transitioning the bun over to a healthier diet with lots of fiber. Hay is very important. You are doing that, and that’s great. It can take a few weeks to get her tummy in order, but yout should start to see gradual improvement soon. If you don’t, she could have a parasite and need deworming/ an antibiotic.

Soft stools are not diarrhea, diarrhea IS a veterinary emergency. A bunny with true diarrhea gets very, very weak, poop is runny and/or mucosy, there are no formed poops at all. The bun must be rushed off to the vet asap for rehydration and medication. This is again NOT what your girl has, I’m only writing it so you know the difference between a “poop-emergency” and a non-emegency poop irregularity and can keep an eye out, diarrhea does occur in very young rabbits. .

Hi, thank you very much for that, I just wanted confirmation that it was just a transition – I don’t want to make a mistake with her. I wasn’t sure how long it takes for them to settle after a transition. Thank you for the links too!
