So my rabbit, Severus, has had some health issues or what not. With the kidney x-rays (pls go back and look at that post b/c the x is her kidney and I would like advice) and her having symptoms of GI stasis 2 weeks ago. Anyways lately I’ve noticed a little skin loss on her back. But I didn’t worry to much since she has pulled out her hair before in protest to the oral meds I used to give her (about 1.5-2 weeks ago). Well her eye has been oozing some sort of thick liquid and I noticed a speck in her eye (white speck). Then I thought to myself, maybe she just got in a fight somehow with the other rabbit that is 3 wire cage layers away. Kind of silly cause it seems impossible but you never know.

Anyways so I decided to see if she had a scab where her hair loss was. Then I found a pitch black rough patch of skin???? WHAT!! I’m just in shock of curiosity ? I’ll post pictures with it. But what do you think this patch of skin is???? And any ideas about her eyes (no pics sorry she is very hard with her eyes)??

If there was fur loss from that location, the rough black skin may just be the start of the fur growing back in

I’m unsure about the weepy eye and white spot, but I would be getting it checked out. White spots in eyes can be symptoms of several issues I believe, not to mentioned the thick liquid could be a sign of infection.

ty! I am going to wait until she finishes her antibiotic injections and a few days to make sure it’s not a side effect from the meds or if it can be cured by the antibiotics. I’m thinking she may of scratched her eye! Thank’s for the advice on her black spot, i was looking at and was thinking the same, but you never know! Thanks again!!!

Staria, my rabbit also had/has a patch of lost fur on his chest right under his chin. I went to see the vet for it (you can find my post about it here on the forum) and they are currently awaiting results for an analysis for some parasite. But the point of my post was not that your rabbit has or does not have this parasite, but that i also started seeing since 2 days a black spot resembling very much with the one you posted in that area where he lost his fur and where before it was white skin. Unfortunately, mine is close to impossible to hold for a picture (unless i really restrain him but that stresses him and i only do it when i really need to).

I also tend to think that it looks more like fur growing back, but just my unexperienced eye cannot say for sure I will keep you updated if I find out exactly what it is.

Ty so much! Please let me know what you find out!

Hope it’s good news! Severus is also hard to take pictures of at times but with her kidney, I’ve had to learn to hold down my 9 pound girl to give her the injections. Oral meds led to bruises and her pulling out her dewlap hair, which is why I think it possible that it could just be hair.

Btw, your rabbit is adorable and reminds me of Severus <3

                  Sorry for the late response.
So, we ended up going to the vet because we noticed some raising in skin on her neck, but not hair loss and also found another patch with hair loss. Comes to find it out she had necrosis, which is when the skin dies (resulted from her multiple antibiotic shots).
The vet was shocked because dogs/cats have a 1 in 10,000 chance to get one spot of it and Severus ended up having 4 spots. She is my rare girl, she was one kidney and now can’t get shots. These showed up around 2-3 weeks after shots ended.
We gave her shots because oral medications are impossible to give at home, her kick is very strong since she is so big and she has biten me through a thick sweater and I got a horrible bruise and last time she starting tearing out her dewlap hair in protest (it took me a hour to give meds literally).
After the vet suspected it was the skin dying, they shaved the areas with hair and cleaned up the hair around the hairless spots so I could give her an a cleaning solution (I forget what it was called but it was a clear orderless solution that the vet gave me). All of the area scabbed and the scabs fell off. She may or may not grow her hair back, it’s likely if it does grow back it could be white. I also had her tested for ringworm while I was there which was negative.
It is harmless. However, the healing didn’t look harmless (it looked gross, especially the 2 spots on her neck).
Even the rabbit rescue I’m fostering my other rabbit from has never seen it before and the vet said they have never seen multiple spots before.

All spots are healed. No hair grow from the spots really. The shaved hair around the spots have grown back.
Pictures of the spots after the vet visit and after the first spot’s scab fell off in this link labeled. I left comments on each picture (there are 4, the other 4 are her x-ray from another post).

They probably gave you clorexidine to treat the bad spots. My bun has had already 2 necrotic spots (although in 2 different occasions), to the last one he lost one ear. In the future do remind the vet about Severus’s skin tendency to the nectoric response, especially in case she’ll need anesthesia (-> IV needle in her ear).

What antibiotic was it? Can it be the reaction was to the medicine and not to the damage to the skin? My bun had bad dermatologic reactions to azitromicin, although not to the point of necrosis.

As for future medications, my vet mentioned a new gizmo that he called the “pill-shooter” that’s supposed to quickly get a whole pill down the bun’s throat. I was too scared to try it, but do ask about it!

Her eye is fine, we ended up giving her a eye cleaner that was recommended to us from the rabbit rescue that I’m fostering to adopt another a rabbit from, the white speck is normal. I check her eye’s daily to make sure everything is okay

I posted the diagnosis of the spots above.

We plan on no more shots at all. Unless an emergency comes up, if so we will have to discuss it at that time.

The solution for any meds will be me bringing her to the vet when she needs her meds and they will give it to her orally. The vet has had a hard time giving oral meds for her first dose so they understood that it was most likely way harder to do it at home. I will ask about the the pill-shooter. Thank you.

I can’t think of the name of the antibiotic, however the reason she was given it was in case her kidney was infected or if she had gi stasis. She had a very large kidney which I talked about in a different post. They don’t think it was from the antibiotic because of the first spot that is lower on her back. She was given fluids quit a few times and one of the times, she jumped and ran, we assume that the needle stuck her lower on her back when she ran or it was when a different vet gave her a bag of fluids (they seemed to do it lower since they knew she was getting shots a lot). This was a shock that she ran because she did so much better with needles. I don’t blame the vet for that occasion though because one my rabbit jumps, she goes unless you are to wrap her up (like you do for oral meds). My rabbit has been to vet at least 6 times this year from Jan-March. She is a very big and strong rabbit. That is what scares me the most about giving her oral meds because her kick is so strong and I don’t want her to hurt herself. It also what makes it difficult to give oral meds, lol. Her kick has so much force I can’t keep her down.

I’m sorry about your rabbit, bless his little heart. I hope he’s doing good!! I will defiantly keep him in mind during any causes she may need anesthesia, hopefully she doesn’t she got spayed back in Jan. This experience with these necrotic spots was very heart breaking. I felt like it was my fault although the vet nor me knew it was going to happen, I just wonder if they hurt?? They look so painful, I call them “gross” because it reminded me a really bad wound. I’m happy I went to the vet because finding out what it is and you giving me advice can really help me in any future situations with Sev. Hopefully no more vet visits because my Sev doesn’t want it and neither does my wallet

Thank you for insight and your advice, I haven’t found really anything about rabbits and these spots!! Although I hate that it happened to your bun. Hugs and kisses to your bun and you xoxo

The only luck about necrosis is that the tissue is dead, so unless a secondary infection occurs there is no pain for the bun, just discomfort if it’s in a bad spot (like the ear, sigh). So don’t worry, she didn’t feel a thing when she had the the black crusts She’ll probably be more upset about her month of bad hair ahaha

Thanks, now he’s fine also if his look is a bit, uhm, “dramatic” And yeah let’s hope she won’t need more procedures, both for wallet and for everyone’s sake!
