Hi! I’m a new bunny mum and am so thankful for this forum!

I was just wondering if anyone else’s bunny dislikes fruit? From what I understand, it’s only meant to be fed in limited quantities as very special treats because of the high sugar content, but I can’t find anything my little buns actually likes! We’ve tried banana, raisins, dried pineapple, apple, grapes, strawberries (tho he ate the green top!) and raspberries and he just could not care less!

I would love to find something to treat him with!

        Any suggestions?

Hi! Acorn is a handsome bun . I noticed on your profile he is just over 3 months old? It’s usually a good idea to wait to introduce fruits until your bun is at least 6 months of age because the stomach of an adult bun handles it better than the stomach of a juvenile. Maybe he is rejecting the fruits because he doesn’t think he is ready? But back to your question – I wouldn’t be surprised if he only liked a couple of those fruits, but none?! Especially banana and apple, which seem to be the most popular bunny favorites. Luna is not a fan of strawberries either. Maybe you could try pear in the future?

            Hello and thank you!

I think I must have misentered his birthdate because he’s actually 5.5 months old. Oops! Although maybe it is just too soon?

I know! I could not believe he turned his little nose up to everything! He does love his greens though, and maybe that’s what threw me as he’s gobbled up everything else we’ve thrown at him. Maybe it’s just my own personal sweet tooth that thinks treats should be sweet though! Maybe his treats will just be extra greens? ?

Oh in that case he is old enough. I still can’t believe he doesn’t like banana or apple lol. Maybe his tastes/mood will change and you can try all those fruits again later. At least he loves his greens! I’d be questioning whether he is really a bun if he didn’t like at least one or the other.

I just checked what I’d entered for his birthdate and it was incorrect, but I also recounted and he’s only 4.5 months old ? I feel like a bad bunny mum! Maybe it is just too soon. I’ll retry in a few months. Thanks for all your help!

He is a very smart bun! You could treat with bell pepper, radish, or some other yummy vegetable? 2 of my bunnies turn their nose up to fruit. The other 2 would eat it if I were to be kind enough to give it to them… I use veggies as treats. I’m really happy that the one pair don’t particularly care for fruit, coz I don’t have to feel guilty, and I know they will have less risk of GI issues. They are great hay eaters. I’d focus on hay, tapering the pellets down between 8-12 months, and not be overly concerned about fruit. I’d rather pick a more healthy treat. We do tend to compare oue own sweet teeth to those of our bunnies…

You could try something like dried dandelion as a treat. My bunnies go crazy for that. Or dried plantain. I usually give them some sort of herb or veg as their bedtime treat – they love dill and thyme. Altho last night they were a bit disappointed as they wanted strawberries but got thyme instead

Thank you both for your input – those are great ideas!

I was always under the impression that buns should start on veggies and fruit at 12 weeks? that’s what we did anyway. Bramble is not a big fan of fruit either although Ron loves it. If you offer Bramble a bit of fruit he will just sniff at it looking at you wishing you would give him broccoli instead, if he realises there is nothing else on offer he will eventually eat it (if Ron hasn’t gotten to it first) but he is certainly not a fan. he used to like banana but he knows now that is where we hide the medicine so he wont eat it even if there genuinely is no medicine in it, he will eat fruit flavoured treats though – go figure!

Some buns have less of a sweet tooth. When I first got my Sterling he really wasn’t sure about fruit. Now he will eat banana and apple but anything else he needs to smell for a good long while and think about it first. Bindi gobbles up anything I give him.
