I saw a reply in another post about someone using their rabbit to star in their novels, and now I want to know how many fellow bunny authors are out there!

I’m working on a series of novels right now, but I haven’t found a way to include bunnies in it yet. So sad.

I’m also not a good at writing for kids… I write more for young adults. It is a dream of mine to write something along the lines of Watership Down, but I can’t think of a way to do that without writing, you know, Watership Down!

Well, when my middle grades novel came out last spring, I was already working on a sequel, and Chewie has a minor role in that. He has a bigger role in the literary fiction novel I’m wrapping up this summer, and then once that’s with the publisher I’ll be focusing on the YA novel The Bun stars in. He insinuated himself into my writing because I spend hours every day observing and interacting with him.

And because he’s The Most Interesting Rabbit in the World!
In fact, I’m shocked you were able to write “Chewie” and “minor” in the same sentence Q8!!

Ellie F, I’m sure a story will come to mind one day. Hopefully like how Harry did to JK Rowling. .

I’ve actually just been reminded I did write a story featuring a rabbit! I still have it. I wrote a children’s book as part of a school English assignment. The main character was Bronwyn Bunny. Lol. I can’t recall the title I gave it. : (
It was about materialism and happiness.
I’d typed the text up on electric typewriter and illustrated it with poster paints.

When I found it in my things years later, I was chuffed that I’d chosen a rabbit character, as this was written a good 15 years before I became a rabbit slave.

p.s. I think I was heavily influenced by Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Woods that I’d loved as a kid.

p.p.s Mum handed me a book recently that someone had handed her. It’s titled “When God was a rabbit” Lol! I’m yet to read it.

Oh! I don’t think Ive ever seen one. I may have to search Youtube. I thiiiiink Im at an age now where my own minds image of certain characters is well and truly cemented in and won’t be influenced by someone elses illustration.

Ooooh, I’m going to have to check out these books you’re talking about, especially with a title like “When God was a Rabbit.”

I have a superhero story in my head I play with sometimes, and I’ve had the idea of making Willow and Julius into superhumans in it: Willow, the small little girl who hides behind her big dumb oaf bodyguard Julius all the time, only she’s the one with the super powerful legs and the sharp nails!

The title is intriguing but I think people would be disappointed if they thought a rabbit is heavily featured in the book. From what I know, it’s just a reference to the main characters childhood, when she had a rabbit she named God. But like I said, I haven’t actually read the book yet!!! This was just from what my Mum mentioned.

Very nice! In a world where kids are relating more to the iridescent glow of smart phones vs the actual living things around them, I think books that help kids relate to another living creature has loads of teachable moments to inspire compassion in other creatures!

I like to write- I’m working on publishing a novel I finished in December that I’ve been working on since 2013, unrelated to rabbits haha and have a few other stories rattling around if there’s ever time to dedicate

That’s really cool you want to write something for middle schoolers- any particular reason for that age group? Just curious haha

I have certainly considered a water color illustrated childrens’ book featuring the misadventures of Tolliver Sprout and his garden friends something in line with a modern, relatable Beatrix Potter because I’m obsessed with her artwork hahaha <3<3

What sort of themes do you want expressed to your audience on a broader note? Or, perhaps- what ‘scene’ has run through your mind? Grab that scene and run with it!

Tolliver Sprout is just the perfect name for a childrens book!

If you guys like Were-animal stories, there is Snowball by M.Y. Zeman featuring a were-rabbit!

I don’t necessarily mean writing for middle schoolers – I’m talking ‘young adult’ in the sense of the same audience as something like Hunger Games, where it’s for high school age but enjoyed by college and older.

Now I really want to write this superhero story about my bunnies… Julius has super strength, but Willow is a little Wolverine in disguise with her claws and kicks, yeah! But what kind of plot could I possibly put this with…

I hate when I get an idea but no story with it.

From experience, I would strongly recommend familiarizing yourself with the publishing world’s lingo and the available markets. If you hope to reach a wider audience (i.e., publish), I mean. Middle grades and YA are two very different niches – as are the even younger groups or the crossover one that’s currently bridging the YA and adult fiction niches. I only mention this because knowing your target age group specifically will determine the lexile level at which you write and the thematic content of your story (and perhaps format, as well). It makes it much easier to move forward with the story from “idea” to “book”

When I was in middle school I wrote a book named after a rabbit I had back then, Buster. When I was in high-school I rewrote it, renamed it Buster: the Flemish Giant, and had it self-published. I don’t have any more copies left.

Currently, I’m thinking of writing a young children’s book about a rabbit with an over active imagination, wherein he imagines himself in all sorts of situations, such as a pirate, a zorro-like swordsman, etc… but I haven’t had time to work on it.

Tolliver Sprout, may I please use your name to be a little bunny boy character in the children’s book I am writing? Reese in the mom and****** I need a bunny name for the dad. Any takers?****** The story is about little Tolliver Sprout, the bunny who thinks he does not like the new food his mom placed in front of him (im thinking kale or something) And he just pouts and does not try it. But Momma bun (Reese) says “That’s not the way, to make the things you don’t like go away”. My aunt wanted me to write a children’s book for her and her baby, so when I saw Jersey’s comment I thought, That is perfect!!!

I would definitively spent over 20$ to read that book!!!!

If only real life Buttercup was a boy. Then you could have Reese and Buttercup as the mom and dad. Or Buttercup could be the mom’s bestie? Or Aunt Buttercup

                                            Buttercup is a boy! Lol.

Oh darn! I did not see her post! I even was thinking of making it watercolor too!

Here is what I have so far:

Tolliver Sprout is a little bunny,

And he is just like you or me.

He loves to go outside all day,

                                            to Binky, jump, and play.

One day when Tolliver Sprout was playing outside,

His Mommy bun called out to him, “It’s time to come Inside”

Tolliver Sprout ran home so fast that in a race he could have been a winner,

He said “I’m so hungry right now, I think it’s time for dinner!”

Mommy bun and Daddy bun already sat down at the table,

So Tolliver Sprout ran and sat on his seat as fast as he was able.

Mommy bun sat a plate near him very close,

And what he saw, to him, looked very gross.

Tolliver Sprout was used to dinners with bananas, pumpkin, and sweet hay,

But the plate that was before him, he just pushed away.

“Ewwww, what is this? It looks green,  gross, and weird!

Whatever it is, i’m not eating it.” Tolliver Sprout sneered.

Mommy bun looked at him and said, “Oh my little Tolliver Sprout,

The things you think you don’t like don’t go away if you just pout.”

Daddy bun said, “If you don’t try new things, you will be missing out,

On all the delicious things the Earth has to offer. There is no doubt!”

Tolliver Sprout looked down at his plate of green,

And thought, maybe there is more to this food than can be seen.

He ate a bit off his fork, and against his belief,

There was so much flavor in this little leaf!

Although some things may look gross,

Try it, and you may see that it is what you like the most.

Lol, It is not very good but I am Trying! I was writing it to teach little kids to not just think that they don’t like something by just looking at it, and if they try it they might like it! My inspiration is my friend who is very picky and says she does not like things when she has never tried it before.

Poems are so hard, it must have taken a lot of time!! The lesson enclosed is certainly relatable to a lot of children! You could even include a rabbit friendly/people friendly snack recipe at the end- as in, a recipe meant for people that is also safe to share with rabbits haha I might one day play with the name Tolliver Sprout for a story, but there’s loads of adorable bunny name combinations really the possibilities are endless haha I love bunnies with last names <3 Beatrice Buttercup? Rosemary Reese? Betula Buttercup? (betula is the genus name for river birch, betula nigra haha) River Reese? Buttercup Brook? Betula Babble? Bethany Babble? Chicory Fennel? This is the fun part

Q8bunny, that is some good advice to remember about your target audience. It’s hard because you don’t want “what will sell” to necessarily cramp your “art” but its important to remember who you’re talking to in terms of the depth of comprehension expected from the reader which varies by age. That’s why JK Rowling is taught in children’s lit classes today, because of her ability to teach/inspire complex emotional relationships relating to issues of social justice. Without using so many ‘grown up’ words, she was still able to use the plight of the house elf, for example, to identify with readers about larger issues of equality that the modern world is still dealing with today. Sorry my inner nerd is showing haha

I will use the name Peanut (Reese Peanut Buttercup), but I don’t know any names that go good with peanut?
