Im okay with her being a girl but she went in for a neuter Tuesday and came home same day after being spay.

She is bright eyed and pretty alert. But NOT eating or drinking. I had some equivalent to critical care (from sherwood). I got her (with syringe) to take part of that and not sure if i should have gave her any baby food but I gave her a small amount of baby food carrots. She wasn’t thrilled with that either. Her belly is not gurgling that I can hear. I have the gas drops but did not give her any because I wasn’t sure she had gas?

If I should be doing anything else please let me know. This is our first bunny. Was expecting an easy neuter, I am actually feeling bad for putting her through the spay even though I know I would have done it for her health even if i did know she was a girl!

        Thanks all

Oh they did send her home with 4 days supply of the metacam, which I successfully gave her Tuesday evening as I was instructed.

Im a bit irritated that even after I asked repeatedly I was not given the medicine to get the gut moving and told to bring her back if she didn’t eat. Can someone tell me why they would not give me that medicine? We live over an hour away from the animal hospital. (In another state for that matter)

It is important that she eats, whether she’s thrilled about it or not – but she also needs to poop. If she doesn’t in 8-12 hours, call your vet. They might want to give her a motility drug to stimulate the intestines. Did you get a prescription for a painkiller? Girl buns can need a painkiller for several days after a spay.

It’s important you keep her warm, bunnies can become hypothermic after surgery, especially if they don’t eat. A heating pad, hand warmers or a hot water bottle that she can access if she wants to is often good, but she needs to be able to move away from the heat source if she doesn’t want it.

Also serve water in a bowl, she might not feel up to bothering with a bottle.

Whatever she wants to eat now is fine, baby food, treats, anything. Sometimes fresh fragrant herbs will spark an appetite.

She did not poop or pee at all after surgery. So 8:30am Wednesday I called the vet. (I got the wife doctor) She was nice and said bring her back in. Bun Bun stayed the day and they gave her subQ fluids through out the day. They got her to eat a little bit of banana and a bit of hay. They tripled the amount of her metacam and also put her on a pain killer that I have to keep in refrigerator. (I forget the name right now) They listened to her belly and said it was moving. After almost all day there still no poop or pee so they (gave the subQ’s several times) decided to take an X-ray. No blockages, all looked normal.  Right after that she started to have some poops! They let her leave at 7pm. She does look better, not hunched up. She is moving a bit around her cage. She nibbled a little hay and she ate about 2 pellets, 1 small square dried papaya, and a raisin.

Not as much as I would like to see but is it enough to keep her gut moving?

Still no motility drugs? We live an hour and 15 mins from the vet so I asked that that please send enough pain meds and possibly the motility drug home but all I got for her was 2 days of the metacam and pain meds.

I can’t exactly force them to prescribe something for her but living that far away I wish they would have sent more days worth of pain meds and the motility drug of course. The only thing I can do would be find another vet which I had a hard time finding these guys and they came highly recommended for rabbits. Im staying home for at least 2 days straight with her (unless she has to go back of course) so I might try and make her some of Vanessas hay cookies.

If you can get in contact with your vet you could ask if you can give ranitidine, dosage for a 5 lb bun is about 1/8 of a 150 mg pill for humans (there’s a huge diff between therapeutic dose and toxic dose, so you don’t need to be more exact than that.) It’s prescription free and sold as Zantac. It works as a gut stimulant in the upper gut, but it’s used by humans to reduce secretion of stomach acid.

She must eat more than what you describe, and if she won’t, you’ll need to syringe feed her. If you can’t get Critical care or Recovery Plus, CrittaCare etc, pellets soaked in water will do, in small portions several times a day. Sometimes a bun will eat pellet mush mixed with canned plain pumpkin or baby fruit puree from a plate or a spoon.

Ok I will call and ask.

How often can she take the ranitidine?

Would famotidine (generic pepcid) work the same as ranitidine for the bun?

I looked it up and famotidine seems ok for bunnies only less potent. It’s the same type of med as ranitidine. (Ranitidine can often be found as a generic as well, Zantac is just a brand name.)

Ranitidine can be given in doses of 2-5 mg per kilo body weight twice per 24 hours by mouth according to WikiRabbit. I personally have only given 1 dose per 24 hours though, it normally acts pretty quickly (within an hour).

The first couple post spay days are the hardest. Has Bun Bun eaten more today?

Thanks for asking, yes, but slowly. She didn’t start eating until this evening. I think she thought she had better because after all the syringe feedings I gave her and she showered me with I was beginning to just laugh when I got the showers from her and I think she did not like that! LOL! She’s not eating as much as she was pre-surgery but definitely eating better to the point I have stopped the syringe feedings.

She wants Nothing to do with me however.  She won’t even take food from my hand anymore. I hope after all the medications are gone (Which will be tonight Friday) that she will forgive me

She is even moving better but still being restricted for a full week.

BTW…the name of the second med they put her on is Buprenex – twice a day. Is this a normal pain med for buns after spay?

Thanks for all the help and just being here for me!!! and Bun Bun.

Buprenex is buprenorphin, an opioid. It’s not as common nowadays as a post-spay pain killer because it slows the gut. But it’s still on the bunny safe list.

It is normal for a bun to eat and poop less after a spay, so it seems to me like she’s on the road to recovery. It’s a pretty invasive procedure. It takes 2 weeks for the wound (inside) to heal and poop can be weird for two weeks as well.

She’ll most likely forgive you once this ordeal is over, right after a spay a bunny goes through a period of hormonal imbalance that can cause grumpiness and even aggression.

She’ll come round, my Buttercup snubbed me for a couple of days afterwards but then she was back to normal. She had a very quick recovery tho so expect yours to be grumpy for a little longer! But she will forgive you, don’t worry about that!
