So rookie is on new meds and off injections…so we are on syringe meds for the next two months. He gets twice a day 2ml.

Now….Soo so far every time the vet says “oh yeah…bunnies LOVE the taste of this medication….it will be easy to give….” Rookie HATES it…but I mean burrow his head away shake his head hates it….I should go back and say “I’d like the flavour that ALL the bunnies hate please….”

It’s a fight every time to try and give it to him. Even in a bunny burrito he will burrow his head away (don’t ask how….it’s crazy!) And I feel terrible each time.

2ml is also too much to hide in treats. Is there ANYTHING I could mix it in that he can have twice a day without harm? Keep in mind he can tell when I mix it so it has to be something super yummy and strong smelling… cause he can tell!

Oh he can tell…cause he loves banana…but as soon as I mix even a little bit in..he goes close smells it and off he goes with a flick of the feet at me of “nice try…”

I will call the vet tomorrow to ask them the same question and also asking if maybe they have any other flavours we could try.

Just fighting him on this x2 a day for the next 2 months is no fun for either of us.

I was going to suggest banana but I guess not. I’ve had some luck with putting a little honey at the end of the syringe & going from there but Idk if that will work. I would call the vet & ask.

Refusal of banana?! Geez Rookie means business! If Rookie is old enough to eat veggies, try the bunny burrito but take a very flavorful/smelly veggie like cilantro or basil (if he likes either of those) and really rub in the scent all over the end of the syringe. You can even wrap the veggie around the end of the syringe a bit. Hopefully he will smell the veggie and be interested enough to not bury his head long enough for you to give him his dose.

He is old enough for veggies. He will be 2 years old in April.
He is picky with veggies…I’m pretty limited to romaine, kale, and dandelion leaves. He takes the occasional batch of cilantro and parsley. But it depends on his mood. He’ll take it for a week and then nothing for weeks. I tried offering him some mint this week for treats…he pretty much laughed at me…
Now I have the dose ino 2 syringes. 1ml each. And I give one at a time and 1ml of water in between.
Takes long to give…I have to wrap him up then re-wrapped continously each time he finds a way to burrow his head.

This probably sounds crazy, but have you tried to offer him the syringe without restraining him? Luna will only take medicine if I don’t touch her. If I walk in the room she will hop over and I will sit and hold the syringe at her eye level and she will start gnawing at the syringe to get at the medicine. It’s still tricky though because she only takes it straight on like a bottle, not on the side of the mouth. So to avoid aspirating the meds I basically just push a couple drops out at a time – I have to push the plunger extra slow and take care not to accidentally push it too much when she tries to grab the syringe out of my hand. I admit the method is not for everyone, but Luna and I have done it so many times that we are comfortable and feel safe doing it this way, and it is the only way we have known.

Not crazy at all..I have tried. He sees the syringe at turns his head away. I’ve even tried showing him just the front of the syringe so he can’t see the whole thing but can smell it and nothing. He won’t take it. I even tried putting in a spoon and on a plate thinking he could just lick it up on his one…NOPE!

Another possible idea, Amelia loves the apple banana flavored critical care, like slurps it out of the bowl loves. Perhaps mixing his meds in a small amount of critical care and letting him eat it like a porridge

Rookie doesn’t like critical care…not even when I added apple and apple juice in it. So I’d be worried that he doesn’t get the full medication amount with the mess that CC comes with.
