        Hi guys,

We got Tambor a cardboard box as a hidey home. He loves it, he likes to nap there during the day and chews on it to open new exits. The thing is that we have noticed that, since then, he seems less exited about his food, especially his pellets  and hay. We give him his dinner in the afternoon and he will eat all the veggies, but the following morning there will still be pellets left. This had never happened before.

Do you think that the ingestion of cardboard could be making him feel less hungry?

Ingesting too much cardboard could definitely be filling him up.

How much is “too much”? Most of what he chews on he leaves on the floor. Maybe, he is eating like a 5x5cm square a day in total, I’d say.

Oh that doesn’t sound like much at all. I wouldn’t have thought that amount would effect his food intake. Has anything else changed?

No… I don’t think anything else has changed. He seems a bit more lethargic in general, though. His active periods, although crazy as always, last less.

We have put the box away now and will keep it away for a few days to test if it really is the cardboard or something else.

                  Hi there,

Does anybody know if ingesting cardboard makes bunnies fill up and eat less? I haven’t read anything about it and I wonder if I should worry about it.

If a bunny eats lots of cardboard it can cause intestinal blockages. A little bit of cardboard is fine though. Cardboard is cellulose, so that would make him feel more full but not provide him with many nutrients. How does his poop look?

                      Hi bam!

Thank you! His pop looks alright. He was eating like a 5x5cm square a day in total (he is a 3 pounds bunny).

It doesn’t sound like a lot for a 3 lb bun, but decreased appetite is always an observandum. There’s no blockage if he poops. If you have kitchen scales you could start weighing him twice a week just to make sure he’s not losing weight (I weigh my Bam in a bowl). And keep keeping an eye

                          Hi guys,

I wanted to give an update on this, just in case somebody is in this same situation in the future. He didn’t lose any weight but, after we removed the box, his appetite came back in full force and has stayed like this. Maybe the 5x5cm square filled him up more than it does to other buns :S.

Poor Tambor, he loved his hidey box.
