So just put out there first of all I am a new bunny owner, I just recently got a bun as did my mom I am here currently just to introduce you to them, so we have Eclipse and Shadow both purchased at a pet store the employee didnt know the breeds sadly (until just recently I didn’t know you could adopt buns or i would of went with that instead) the buns are 8 weeks old very energetic and seem to be loving their new home so far and overall I love them to deaths and I look forward to all the amazing advice I will be able to get from you folks bye bye! Welcome to Binky Bunny. I don’t know if the pet store employee told you the gender of the bunnies, but don’t go by that. Most pet store employees know very little about rabbits and their care. They will often sell 2 rabbits to someone, telling them that they are both female or male. Then a few weeks later, there is a surprise litter, sometimes a second litter, since a rabbit can get pregnant immediately after giving birth if it wasn’t known that she was pregnant and she is still with the male.

You didn’t say if you are housing the 2 rabbits together, but if you are, they should be separated before they are 12 weeks old to prevent pregnancy if you have a male and female, and also to prevent any aggression that may lead to fighting when their hormones kick in. It can be difficult to correctly sex a rabbit, so it’s better to be safe, and you don’t want any fighting anyway. If you plan on keeping them together, they can be rebonded after their surgeries. You will need to wait at least 2 weeks and a month is better before rebonding them after their surgeries.

Thank you everyone and Tobyluv we were told they were female and male so we aren’t housing them together I don’t think we ever will just considering the genders, at the pet store Eclipse was actually housed with a guniea pig and I was doing that up until I found out not to they seem to still trying to get used to being separated but I feel it’s better then doing it too late planned on separating them before maturity either way

Why? A lot of people say opposite sex pairs are the easiest to bond.

We just don’t want to risk babies that’s my personal opinion anyways maybe if my mom’s bun gets fixed as well because she doesn’t see the need to fix hers (she won’t listen to me that she should no matter what) so I would just prefer not to personal preference really

It is essential that females are spayed, without it she has a very high risk of developing cancer. 

Btw even if it turns out that they are both the same gender, they still need to be neutered/spayed in order to live together.

Welcome welcome! You can use paint to shrink your pictures down and post them. I’m sure the little buns are very photogenic

Be mindful of where you step as they run around your home! They are silent and quick, so an accidental kick is very likely if you’re not careful

Ah okay Tell your mum that if she doesn’t get the boy neutered, he likely won’t be fully litter trained, and he might spray everywhere too.

You won’t be able to bond the bunnies unless your mom gets her bunny neutered. Even though your bunny will be spayed, the other bunny needs to be neutered. Otherwise, he will likely be wanting to hump the female all the time and that will lead to fighting, plus it’s intimidating for the female.

Just to clarify a few things I think I’ve made a little un clear, my mom is doing as she wishes with her bunny Shadow but currently I am caring for both right now though as they are living in my room in separate cages her view on fixing her bun is she doesn’t find the point if he’s going to just die in a few years and there is no changing her mind sadly as for my bunny Eclipse I will be getting her spayed and I am doing all the research I can to have her living her life to the fullest thank you all for the advice you have given me so far it has been helpful to know these tidbits from other rabbit owners of which have housed buns much longer then I cx

Yeah idk but you try telling her anything she won’t listen so I’m going to raise my bun how I would like and as best I can and she can just deal I want Eclipse to last as long as her little self will let her

I’m glad you are doing right by your female and having her spayed etc and not housing her with a unneutered male
I can tell you are thinking of what is best for her.

Hopefully your mum will change her mind and neuter the boy , not to bond as it sounds like that isn’t for you guys since one will stay with your mum anyway later and seperating them once bonded isn’t an option , but for the other benefits and preventions. His behaviour will change at sexual maturity anywhere from 4-6months old. He may start spraying , he may become aggressive , he may get moody – lots of males so signs of some if not all of the hormonal traits typical of bunnies at maturity.
Hopefully she will change her mind , but as you said – you can’t make her and you can only do what it right by your bunny and hopefully it encourages her to do the same

Shadow looks very much like a Netherland Dward; I say this because he looks almost identical to my Wick, haha. I’m tempted to say Eclipse is too, though the ears look a little larger in the picture and the head is a bit large too (in proportion to body). It is possible they’re both Nethies though, because ear size/head size will vary within the breed as well.

OHHH thanks weve been thinking they’re dwarfs I’ve just been skeptical because of the ear size it’s good to know though that someone can at least give me a general possible idea of what breed they are

Yep, yep! As they get older, it can become more certain if you see: 1) their faces don’t get longer (they don’t develop a snout/nose doesn’t start jutting out), 2) their eyes remain disproportionately large in comparison to their heads, 3) their ears don’t get longer than 2in (approx), and 4) in general, they can always be described as being shaped like a ball, haha.
