On Wednesday my beautiful bunny Summer died. She left behind her brother Ollie. They are litter mates and have never spent a day in their whole five years apart. Ollie is eating very well, and is pooping and peeing well also. He is drinking a few times a day, but probably only a half a cup or 3/4 of a cup. I don’t think he was ever a big water drinker but it’s definitely noticeable since we would refill the water bowls often when his sister was around. I think I’m just being paranoid about the water. But he is doing very well. We even saw him flop yesterday!

The only thing he seems to be doing that is odd is he is grooming himself a lot. Summer used to spend hours grooming him so we aren’t sure if this is just him cleaning himself now that she’s gone or him acting out because he’s grieving. How much grooming is too much grooming? I am just so worried about him and don’t want to lose another bunny.

Over grooming is usually a sign of stress. Have you considered going to a shelter to see if he bonds with any bunnies there to bring home?

I’m sorry about the loss of your beautiful Summer. Spend as much time as possible with Ollie. Also, keep him well brushed since he is grooming so much, so that he doesn’t ingest a lot of fur. It’s only been 3 days since you all lost Summer. Hopefully, the excess grooming will slow down or stop soon. You may want to give him a plush animal to cuddle with, but you don’t want him to be overgrooming that either or ingesting whatever it’s made of. Ollie would probably like to have another companion, so maybe in a little while you can see what rabbits are available at area shelters or rescues. On Pet Finder, you can filter by gender and age, so you may find some female rabbits in rescues that are around his age.
