        Good morning,

I just got a rescue rabbit last night. I have never owned a rabbit before, his name is Bertrand and I’m told he is twelve months. He is absolutely delightful, he is very affectionate and curious and has been doing these binkys everywhere. I’m just a bit concerned that he hasn’t eaten a lot of food. He is exploring and I’m hoping he is just distracted. I have lots of hay, hard pellets and fresh vegetables out for him, but I haven’t seen him once sit down for a big munch. I used to have guinea pigs and they used to just hoover up the salad. Do rabbits eat differently?

Thanks for any advice for this novice

Hi B&A, welcome! ,.. I’m sure, since its been only a few hrs, – its as you say – bun, is just curious about new surroundings, and is trying to take it all in… if its been several hrs,.. & you are allowing him free roam, at this time.. I would try to get him back into his house/cage/pen,.. just so you can monitor him a bit more.. you never know, what circumstances he came to you from, being a rescue,.. this may be his first ever time, outside of a cage even.. who knows.

His food/water consumption, as well as waste out production, needs to be observed tho. Let him get settled to his new cage area at first, at least, would be my advice. – Is he neutered already?

Hi Yoyo, thank you for your advice. He has started eating more and he is going to the washroom frequently. I have had him out the cage all the time unless I go to bed or go out, but I work from home so I am here a lot. He seems to have settled in but it is difficult to get him back in the cage.. I don’t want to pressure him too much since it is early days. I am taking him to the vet on Tuesday to get registered and a check up and to arrange for him to be neutered.
