Okay so I have had Abe for nearly 3 weeks. He had a 110cm long cage but when my partners dad came home from working away he wanted us to get a smaller one as it was sticking out too much, so we got him a 3 tier 80cm cage instead but moved him in to our room instead of the hall. Our room is where he plays out, so he is used to the room. He took a while to get used to the levels of the cage but has now grasped it, however he won’t wee or poo in there, he either jumps on our bed trying to do it there or he will do it on the floor, not in his cage. Now the first night he was in the room he didn’t chew his bars until 7am but then wouldn’t stop, so I let him out and later that day went and got the pen. So he has his cage and the pen to play in permanently, he is never locked in his cage but again at 7 this morning, he started chewing the bars?! I thought the extra freedom would stop this?

Luna is out all day and only locked in at night time in a 4’×4′ xpen and she would still go in there and chew her bars during the day. I bought a roll of corrugated cardboard from amazon that is 12″ wide and zip tied it to the bottom half of her pen. She only does it to one side. She does chew on the cardboard, but it’s better on her teeth than metal and if it gets too bad I can replace it with more. Just an idea that may work for you too!

When Wick use to do this (confined to large pen after experiencing free roam) I brusk-ly moved his body away from the bars and held him there until he settled, saying a blatant no. I’d keep doing this until he’d stop. It was a very rough moving and holding down, not to harm him in any sense, but just to establish that I clearly did not view this behavior as positive. It took about two days, but now he just sits by the bars. I can tell he learned, because he’ll nuzzle the bars, but then back up and sit without chewing or tugging. He’d use to tug so hard his body would flop over. I want to emphasize that Wick is not afraid of me or the bars, he just learned biting is bad.
