My rabbits took a year to bond and my female is due to have a dental op (spurs) and this will be first time sine they have been bonded. I’m worried that the vets won’t accept them staying together and that I will have to take male home. They go everywhere together and I don’t want the bond to break as it took so long to make. Has anyone else had this issue?

I take my boys to the vet together for their check ups, but when Bramble has his dentals he goes on his own – Ron is always happy to see him when he comes home. I don’t know if its the best thing for a bun just out of surgery to have another bun around them right away even if they are bonded, I think they need a few hours for the drugs to wear off but that’s just my opinion.

No I haven’t but mine was a hard bond too and I’m taking both everywhere the other goes, no question !!!! LOL
Surely the vets will tell you if it’s OK or not….?
Could one stay in a transport carrier in the same (big) cage so they can smell each other (and also smell the same when they go back home?)

            If not….
Maybe if you take the male with female, leave female and return home with male, then take male back with you to pick her up – then that will be a happy compromise…

my advice, may possibly not be ” popular opinion” but,.. hard truth,.. when your pets need a vet visit, one that requires an overnight visit, at that, well,.. sometimes that’s going to happen,.. your buns life wont fall apart immediately, because of it tho. I do understand that their bonds, are VERY strong, but, in the scheme of life,.. a night, will not make or break them.
Were I live,.. the cost alone, of 2 overnight animals, = about $120 bucks a night.. maybe this is small change to some,. not to me tho lol,… they can revisit the other, the next day xD

OK thanks for the advise I will wait to see vets view but dropping off and picking up with male doesn’t sound like a bad plan if I can’t

I’d call them beforehand and say you want them both to stay together and see what they say. I would definitely take both of mine, especially for an overnight stay wherever possible.

It’s not about them missing each other tho, it’s the fact that the poorly rabbit could come back smelling completely different and the home bunny might not recognise them. Personally, it’s not a risk I’d take if it can be helped.

Ive done both. Sometimes i take huin to the vet with lancelot for drop off and pick up, othertimes not. I think drop off and pick up in a carrier together would be helpful if the one bunny smells different. Iv never had them lose s bond over it. Even when i took lancelot out of town with me for a night. When i have him diapered, he smells different enough that guin will bite him and i keep them separated for that. But for any strange smell issues, if the cet wont allow Both or it will cost too much, i wiuld do drop off pick up in a small carrier. The bun u brought withmight be stressed enough in the carrier to gorgive the strange smell? But again, the only smell issues i have had are with diapers. Lancelot has dental work 4 times a year.

as a new bun owner,.. this, ofc, struck me.. – many sorries, I do not want to derail a thread, ever, but..my curiosity has gotten the best of me..is this, a realistic amount of times, in a year, to have dental done on normal, active bunnies?

I just would like to know, so I can keep on track is all..

Four is not uncommon. My N Dwarf had that many times in his later years. PIA for sure but unfortunately there is no other solution. He lived to be 11+.

When my N Dwarf got older I guess his teeth just shifted or something. They have a different shaped head. Plus bunnies, like humans, have wayyyyyy toooooo many teeth!!!!

Yes the doctor would mildly sedate him and quickly file them down. I had one vet who wanted to make a five star production out of it with an anesthesiologist and everything. Totally unnecessary for a simple tooth trim. The less you traumatize them the better.

If your vet wants to do that, find a different doctor. I had another vet who, when looking in Biskit’s mouth, got the scope wedged in somehow and Biskit bit his tongue and there was blood everywhere. He was in no danger but the Vet was because I wanted to kill him for that!

We don’t have very many good bunny doctors here so when I found one who could do the teeth trimming quickly and painlessly for my bunny I stuck with her.

Lots of hay, willow cubes, wood blocks, anything to chew on is good.

It depends on the rabbit. My other 3 have never had or needed a tooth filing. They eat lots and lots of hay, and their teeth stay naturally filed. They are also California/Rex/New-Zealand, so no weird shaped head issues. Lancelot is a lop with a squished up head, so he has “wave mouth” where his teeth look like they are doing the Mexican wave. The vet tells me it looks like a hand grenade went off in his mouth. With the limited space in his jaw structure, the teeth are badly aligned, and don’t wear evenly. This can cause painful spurs, or really sharp tips that gouge into the cheek. When he still ate hay, I had to have his teeth filed twice a year. Now that he has stopped eating hay (since he got sick with EC), his teeth need to be filed more frequently. I take him to the vet 4 times a year for dental checkups. If his teeth are less bad than the previous visit, then I space out the visits a bit more. If the vet says – how soon can you bring him in, it means his teeth need filing asap. If he sais bring him in whenever you have time in your calendar, I wait a month. But like I said – my other 3 buns have good hay-eating habits and good teeth.
