(nose twitch, nose twitch) “My human has been acting odd lately. She keeps staring at me and her eyes get all watery. Something about a ‘spay’ next week – whatever that is. I’ll have to Google it later. We are going to a new vet tomorrow for a physical exam. Who knows why. I mean I feel fine; I ran a marathon around the room yesterday and have been eating all my cecals. I did rip up some carpet fibers this morning but I swear I didn’t ingest!”

My human took me to the new vet yesterday. Her and the vet seemed to hit it off; they were both bantering back and forth for quite some time across the table I was laying on. Then I heard the vet explain how he performs spays. Right then it hit me like a bunch of carrots. He plans on subduing me with isofluorene anesthesia, removing both my uterus and ovaries (quickly and carefully to avoid the risk of adhesion), closing me up with subcuticular sutures, giving me some meds, monitoring my blood pressure and body temperature closely in a special ICU room, then sending me home with pain meds when my human picks me up the same day. After that, he said I’ll need the most monitoring over the next 24-48 hours. He also said it’s important that I take it easy for at least a week – no jumping on the bed or running around.

Satisfied with the vet’s expertise, and after fumbling me like a football back into my carrier for the ride home, my human scheduled me to be spayed next Tuesday. Apparently I had no say in the matter, but I guess it’s a good idea since the chances of female rabbits getting uterine or ovarian cancer are so high. Although my human already knew not to fast me prior to the surgery, the vet made sure to tell her not to fast me and that the receptionists are told that too.

My human has already begun preparations; she’s going to pack me a lunch and a shirt with her scent on it to take with me the day of the spay, she’s going to take the whole week off of work and buy me some fresh hay and green leaf salads to entice me to eat (we have critical care on hand just in case), and she bought me a new warm fleece blanket and hot water bottle.

Any suggestions on what else she should do to prepare?

Day 0: The whole weekend I watched my human prep for my spay day and I think we are ready. I don’t usually lay on blankets, but I tested out the new fleece anyway. I also taste tested the variety of veggies she bought . And the guilt keeps giving, because tonite she is giving me my first taste of banana! Real banana – not the fake banana flavored Baytril.

LOL! You’ll be just fine. Cousin Zou says enjoy the R&R and take advantage of all the yummy things your human will give you to tempt you to eat…. and EAT !!!

Be good and… good luck !!

Thank you Vienna. I just hope she doesn’t try to give me strawberries. I know I’d probably look really cute eating one, but I’ve told her several times that I’m not a fan of the strawberry

I hopped late to this party, but have a safe spay and a quick and full recovery, Luna. My mom says to nomnom and sleep because that’s when the body heals best. (I do these two things all the time just because I likes them.) *nose boop*

Day 1: I made it! My human brought me home a little while ago, and I gotta say, I feel like cecal. Surgery takes a lot out of a bun. But I did eat my veggies, nibbled on 3 pieces of hay, and left about 5 pellets in my litter box – so I’m doing ok so far . I’m going to snuggle up next to my hot water bottle and fleece blanket for awhile until she gives me my metacam.

                              Day 1 (continued)

: Hey it’s Luna’s human here – just wondering if Luna is ok because lately she has been hopping in her litter box but when she hops out there aren’t any poops. Earlier there were a couple pees and 5 poops, and there have been 2 more poops since then, but it seems like she’s trying to poop or thinks she has to poop but doesn’t. Is this normal the day of the spay? Or does it seem more like very early stasis?

(over the past 7 hours she has eaten only a few strands of hay, but both times I gave her veggies she ate them right away)

Aww… what a good sweet girl you are, Luna. You’re doing everything right. Your hooman mommy must be so proud of you

(…nose twitch…’Mom get off my post!’) Thanks for the reassurance Q8. Yes, my human is super proud of me. I ate some more hay and dropped a few pellets in my litter box just so she would relax again, though I’m sure her constant hovering and intermittent worrying will continue for several days .

Yep. Prepare to be helicoptered. Your poops too. Although I’m sure that by now she’s figured out that between your period of not eating due to the surgery, and the metacam which slows down gut movement a bit, it’ll take a wee while for your poops to be regular again. But it sounds like you’re on the right track, especially eating salad so well, and your hooman will just continue to keep a mommy eye on you because she loves you.

I have to say I’m impressed with you, Luna! You ate your vegs and hay AND you made poops on your first day home! It can take up to 2 weeks for your poop to get all the way back to normal, but you certainly seem to be on the right track, as Q8 says.
