I hope this is the right forum for this. My vets office is closed and I’m so worried. I think- I’m almost 100% positive- my girl has ripped her stitches. There’s no blood, and she seems perfectly fine otherwise(she does have pain medication), but she does NOT want to be touched anywhere but her head. She’s eating just fine too. But I managed to get her to lift up so I could glance at her belly and it looked open. I freaked out and spent the next ten minutes trying to get my boyfriend to be able to look. She refused, the more we fussed until he finally just got her by the paws and lifted her front half up and I snapped a quick picture, that unfortunately cannot be uploaded to the site because of file size. It looks terrible, to me, and I’m so upset. But I don’t even know what it’s supposed to look like normally. I wouldn’t think like this, at the least. I know the top incision is open, but I can’t even tell about the bottom incision.

I don’t think this is an emergency, even if it feels like it, because she isn’t bleeding or acting strange. She actually seems normal. I only checked her because she seemed willing to lift up and I’ve been worried. What should I do? Should I disinfect the cage again? Give her a tummy band? Take out her little box and hay, so it’s not poking her in the belly or putting infection in her? I’m going to call the vet first thing in the morning, but what can I do to help her now? More importantly, is this an emergency?

Try to restrict her movements as much as possible, possibly putting her in a carrier or smaller space, and possibly sit up or sleep with her to keep any eye on her. Don’t remove her litter box or hay, since it’ll be cleaner for her to have a place to go than spread it around her area and she should still have access to hay.

Otherwise, get her into the vet as soon as possible, since they’ll have to clean her up and close her up and give her some antibacterial meds.

Sleepy has good advice. You can upload a pic to an external source like imgur or Flickr etc and link to the pic in your post, that way size isn’t a problem.

Thanks guys. I got her into the vet this afternoon and it looked even worse. There was basically a hole in her belly when the vet picked her up and she was still going at herself even in the vets office. I just don’t understand how she could chew a hole in herself without stopping. It was horrifying for a new bunny mom like me. I’m so glad I took her in.

They’re keeping her overnight to redo the stitches and find something to put around her neck to keep her from fooling with them.

Oh goodness me that sounds awful, thank goodness you took her to the vets. Hopefully they’ll sort the little munchkin out
