I’ve posted a thread similar to this in the bonding section but I’m even more confused so thought I’d ask here…

Sometimes Peanut and Buttercup will sniff each other’s bums intently in a circling motion. There is no biting, nipping, fur pulling but because of the circling, it makes me feel uneasy. That has happened a few times and it usually stops after 10 seconds. Today, it went on for about 20ish seconds, and they were sort of sniffing each other’s butts and genitals and nibbling at each other’s fur at their back end. Again, there was no fur pulling or anything like that, but is this okay or not okay? After about 20 seconds, Buttercup stopped moving so they just sat together I think with her head resting on him? Then Peanut started sniffing her butt again and his tail was going up and down a bit. Then she just hopped away into the litter box to have a munch. Peanut then ran around the back of the litter tray under the sideboard and thumped, ran under the computer table and thumped again and then ran excitedly back under the sideboard and flopped right by the tray Buttercup was in.

What does any of this mean? It didn’t seem aggressive but again, made me feel uneasy because I’m not sure what’s acceptable and what isn’t. I don’t think they groom each other as much either?

If anyone’s interested, Peanut is now in one of the litter trays and Buttercup is relaxing under the computer table. Usually they’ll relax under the sideboard so I wonder if she wants to get away from him…

Added: Peanut has now ran over to her and sat right next to her and they’re now both grooming themselves lol. Is it possible this is just a lovers tiff? Is it normal?

Added more: Sorry guys, I’ve got more to add, Buttercup was chewing on a log toy and Peanut came up to her and started sniffing her butt intently again and began digging at her back – he does this sometimes when he wants her to move but she usually hops out of the way. She stayed put so he kept doing it, then when she did move, he followed her to sniff and dig. What’s going on  He seems obsessed with sniffing her at the moment. He’s now 2 months post neuter.

Added even more!: After sniffing and digging a little more, and Buttercup hopping out of the way, he groomed her head a little and then flopped. She has flopped right by him.

Sorry if this is a little unclear, I’m panicking a bit. I don’t know whether he’s just being an annoying husbun today or if it’s more serious.

I wonder if it was all down to excitement? They seem back to normal now *touch wood*

Typically, this type of behavior is observed immediately prior to a humping attempt.

That’s exactly what I first thought but he never actually went through with trying to mount. Maybe he was trying to test her reaction? Doesn’t explain why she was sniffing him too though as she has never (even during bonding) humped him.
